The return of a classic Bundesliga fixture lived up to its billing as Hamburg snatched a dramatic late draw against Dortmund at the Volksparkstadion.

The hosts came into the match struggling for goals, having scored just eight all season – the joint-fewest in the league – while Dortmund arrived with an impressive defensive record of six clean sheets from nine matches.

Both sides were forced into changes, with Hamburg missing suspended duo Fábio Vieira and Immanuël Pherai, while Dortmund coach Niko Kovač made four alterations to the side that lost to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League midweek, including a first Bundesliga start of the season for captain Emre Can.

First-half stalemate

Dortmund dominated the early exchanges, keeping Hamburg penned back in their own half with relentless pressing. The first meaningful opportunity came after six minutes when Daniel Svensson's shot was heroically blocked by Jordan Torunarigha. The visitors continued to control possession but struggled to create clear openings, with Nico Schlotterbeck heading over from a Pascal Groß corner in the 18th minute.

Hamburg gradually grew into the game, with Yussuf Poulsen testing Gregor Kobel with a tame effort. The best chance of the half fell to the hosts in the 39th minute when Nicolas Capaldo rose highest to meet Giorgi Gocholeishvili's cross, only to see his header crash against the crossbar with Kobel beaten.

Visitors take control

The second half began with Hamburg showing greater intent, winning a corner within seconds of the restart. As the game approached the hour mark, Poulsen was forced off with an apparent muscular injury, replaced by Königsdörffer – a substitution that would prove decisive.

Dortmund finally broke the deadlock in the 64th minute when a recycled corner led to Schlotterbeck flicking the ball into the path of Chukwuemeka, who volleyed home from just inside the box for his first Bundesliga goal of the season.

Late drama

Hamburg looked to respond by introducing Robert Glatzel for Rayan Philippe, and the substitute nearly made an immediate impact in the 76th minute when Albert Sambi Lokonga intercepted a loose pass from Groß. He then fed Glatzel in the box, but his tame effort was comfortably saved by Kobel.

As the match entered its closing stages, Dortmund appeared to be heading towards a third consecutive 1-0 victory in the Bundesliga, even bringing on defensive reinforcements in the form of Marcel Sabitzer and Aarón Anselmino.

However, with seven minutes of added time signalled, Hamburg mounted one final assault. In the 97th minute, Miro Muheim delivered a pinpoint cross from the left, and substitute Königsdörffer rose majestically to head past Kobel, sending the Volksparkstadion into euphoria.

Man of the Match: Carney Chukwuemeka

Despite the late heartbreak for Dortmund, Chukwuemeka was deservedly named Man of the Match for his all-action display.

The midfielder was at the heart of everything good about Dortmund's performance, registering a match-high four shots and winning 15 challenges. His goal – a composed first-time finish from inside the box – looked set to be the winner until Königsdörffer's late intervention.

Beyond the statistics, Chukwuemeka showed excellent technical ability throughout, particularly when combining with Beier to create a golden opportunity in the 35th minute that he fired over. The 22-year-old's energy and creativity made him stand out on a pitch filled with international talent.
