Franz Beckenbauer honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award

World footballing legend Franz Beckenbauer has been honoured at a ceremony in Paris, with the former Bayern Munich and Germany superstar receiving a posthumous lifetime achievement award.

The man known throughout the game as Der Kaiser sadly passed away at the age of 78 in January, but his legacy lives on as one of the greatest ever to have played, as this latest prize attests to. Fittingly, Beckenbauer's latest accolade was announced during this year's Ballon d'Or awards, an honour the Bayern defender won twice, in 1972 and 1976.   

A winner of the Bundesliga on five occasions with Bayern and once with Hamburg, Beckenbauer won the European Cup as captain of the Bavarian giants three seasons in a row in the 1970s.

His immense defending and leadership skills also stood out with Germany, with whom he raised the FIFA World Cup in 1974 and the European Championship two years prior. 

As a manager, Der Kaiser took up the reins with West Germany in 1984. After suffering World Cup final heartache against Diego Maradona's Argentina in '86, he helped his country to gain revenge with victory at the 1990 tournament in Italy, the Albiceleste again the opponents in the showpiece game. 

He would later go on to win Bundesliga and UEFA Cup honours as coach of Bayern.
