Having recovered from back-to-back defeats last October in the tournament’s league phase, Bayern appeared to be on course for qualification following three subsequent wins against Benfica, Paris Saint-Germain and Shakhtar Donetsk. Added to that, Vincent Kompany’s side took to Rotterdam on the back of four straight Bundesliga victories. Yet the hosts – two points behind their German opponents before kick-off – had their own designs on advancing to the knockout stages and that ambition was in full evidence as the rain teemed down on the famous De Kuip stadium. To the delight of the locals, Brian Priske’s side edged ahead in the 21st minute when Mexican forward Santiago Giménez expertly controlled Gijs Smal’s long pass over the top before smashing past Manuel Neuer. The energetic Kingsley Coman and Harry Kane tried in vain to level things up, but Bayern’s night would take another turn for the worse when Alphonso Davies pulled up with a muscle problem. His replacement, Raphaël Guerreiro, upended Calvin Stengs in the away area shortly after coming on and Giménez doubled the Eredivisie team’s lead from the spot.

The last time Feyenoord faced Bundesliga opposition here, Bayer Leverkusen ran out 4-0 winners at the start of this season’s revamped competition. Bayern looked to take some inspiration from their domestic rivals as they sought a way back into this encounter. Starting his first game following a recent bout of flu, Jamal Musiala turned up the heat before feeding Kane, whose shot was thwarted by Justin Bijlow. The home goalkeeper’s impressive night continued soon afterwards when he pushed Musiala’s close-range header over the top. Kompany threw Leroy Sané – a player with 23 career Champions League goals – into the mix and the Bayern No.10 looked set to add to his European tally when teed up by Kane. However, Sané could only nod against the upright with the goal at his mercy. The home side took full advantage of Bayern’s profligacy, with Ayase Ueda adding a third before the end. The Bavarians slipped to 15th in the 36-team standings as result and will need to beat Slovan Bratislava in their final league phase game to have any chance of advancing automatically to the last 16.

Match stats

  • Kane has scored 34 goals in his first 49 Champions League appearances, including 13 in 18 tournament games for Bayern.
  • Musiala’s contributed five goals across Bayern’s first seven Champions League matches in 2024/25 (two of his own, plus three assists).
  • The likes of Musiala and Pavlović weren’t even born the last time Bayern met Feyenoord before this latest encounter, the Bavarians winning 3-1 at home and drawing 2-2 away in the 2001/02 group stage.
  • Feyenoord faced Dortmund in the 1999/2000 groups, drawing 1-1 home and away.

Final whistle: Feyenoord 3-0 Bayern Munich

Bayern had 80 percent of the ball, three times as many passes and shots, but still lose 3-0. This wasn't jammy – Feyenoord defended doggedly and hit the visitors hard each time they broke. A defensive masterclass from the underdogs that sees them leapfrog the Germans in the standings.

Bayern will want this to end now. It's been a miserable night at De Kuip.

Game over for Bayern!

It's a fabulous goal and finish from Ueda, who latches onto a central pass in behind the defence before racing into the Bayern box and coolly slotting beyond Neuer. It's 3-0 to Feyenoord now – no way back from here for Bayern.

Musiala hooked by Kompany

Youth makes way for experience as Müller enters the fray.
83'

Feyenoord make two changes

Moussa and Paixão come off for Ueda and Bueno.
82'

Feyenoord attack!

Mitchell races down the right wing after a long clearance, pursued by Upamecano. He gets to it first before shooting from a tight angle. It goes wide of the far post but it's a reminder to Bayern that they can't abandon defending just yet.
79'

Goretzka shoots high

Things are getting a little more desperate for Bayern, who are starting to take more pot shots at goal. Goretzka looses a wild effort over the bar when a little more composure might have been called for.
74'

Feyenoord make another change

Nieuwkoop makes way for Mitchell.
70'

Sané hits the post!

Kane twists a defender on the left-hand side of the box before lofting a cross to the back post. Sané is completely alone there but can only aim a header at the foot of the post when scoring looked easier.
camera-photo

Frustration building

Bayern lead in every stat but the one that matters, as chance after chance goes begging.
69'

Kane goes close!

Kane is found inside the area with space to pull the trigger but Hancko sticks a back leg out to block the shot somehow. This is seriously stubborn defending from the home side. How long can they keep this up?
67'

Upamecano just wide!

Kimmich whips in a cross but it's fisted away by the 'keeper. It drops outside the box to Upamecano, who curls one towards the right post. A double deflection carries it agonisingly wide and out for a corner.
64'

Giménez almost adds a third

The Mexican charges in behind the Bayern defence and into the box. He goes to pull the trigger but Upamecano recovers just in time to rob the ball. Could have been game over.
63'

Double change from Bayern

Fresh legs in defence and attack for Vincent Kompany's side. They have to up the tempo now.
59'

Musiala denied!

Kimmich, wide on the right, whips in a trademark cross, with plenty of whip and curl on it. Musiala rises highest in a crowded penlatz area and aims a strong header at goal. It's a great effort but it's too central and Bijlow pushes it over his own bar.
57'

Bayern sloppy

Sané collects a pass with space on the left wing and feeds the ball down the line for a rampant Kimmich. But it's overhit and runs out for a corner, despite Kimmich's best efforts. Poor play from Bayern.
53'

Kane should score!

Musiala picks the pocket of a defender in the Feyenoord half and slaloms his way towards goal. He picks out Kane on the left of the area and the English smashes a shot at goal, but Bijlow makes himself nice and big and the ball ricochets behind for a corner.
50'

Feyenoord make a change

Nadje comes in for the injured Stengs.
49'

Olise blasts over!

The Frenchman saunters down the left flank unchallenged before cutting inside and unleashing a powerful shot from just outside the area. It's high and it's wayward. They'll need to do a lot better than that to save this game.
48'

Bayern must believe

The Germans have averaged over three goals a game this season in the Bundesliga. They'll need to maintain that here if they're to get three points out of this game.
46'

Peeeep!

Feyenoord get us back underway at De Kuip. Bayern have it all to do this half.

Half-time: Feyenoord 2-0 Bayern Munich

Bayern have dominated the ball and created some good chances but Feyenoord lead thanks to a Giménez brace. They've been ruthless on the counter in this game, and deserve their lead.

Feyenoord double their lead!

Superb penalty from Giménez, who smashes his effort to the left-hand side and into the net. Neuer goes the right way but the shot is just too powerful. Feyenoord well in charge here.

Penalty to Feyenoord!

A lightening counter from a Bayern corner sees the home side storm up the field in numbers. Guerreiro makes a sloppy challenge in the box, barging into Stengs from behind and the referee points to the spot.

Injury concern for Davies

Bad news for Bayern, who are forced to sub off a visibly in pain Davies, who has to be helped off the field.
45'

Bayern kept at bay

Kimmich jogs over to the left to swing in another corner but it's headed away thunderously by a defender to a huge cheer around De Kuip. The next resulting corner is also cleared.
45'
+ 3

Feyenoord defend doggedly

It's bodies-in-the-box stuff from Feyenoord, who throw themselves at every header and shot Bayern throw their way. They're desperately hanging on for that half-time whistle.
45'

Seven added minutes

The fourth official signals for a whopping seven minutes of added time – courtesy of the flare smog that caused an early stoppage.
42'

Kane misses golden chance!

Bayern should be level. Laimer plays a lovely ball down the right for Olise, who cuts a brilliant cross inside to Kane. The Englishman has space to shoot inside the area and looks certain to score. His shot pounds into the ground en route to goal but Bijlow reacts superbly to deny him.
41'

Good work from Laimer

Laimer wriggles though a challenge on the right and works his way into the Feyenoord area. He tries to find Kane at the front post but his cross is blocked and the ball goes out.
40'

Bayern boss the ball

The Germans have enjoyed 78 percent possession so far at De Kuip, but find themselves behind thanks to sloppy defending.
camera-photo

Pressure's up!

Feyenoord's players have hassled and harried their guests so far at De Kuip. Bayern could be in for a long night.
33'

Coman close again!

Coman bursts past his defender on the left flank and scurries into the Feyenoord area. He's not got many options inside so he elects to shoot. It's low and hard but the angle is tight and Bijlow gets low to prevent the equaliser. Great play from the Frenchman.
33'

Musiala shoots wide

Bayern's talisman wriggles in possession to create room to shoot, but he's off balance and his attempt is bending away from goal as it flies past the left post.
30'

Feyenoord take control

The home side enjoy a period in possession, knocking the ball around De Kuip smartly. They're not going to make life easy for Bayern tonight.
27'

Coman goes close!

The Bayern winger receives the ball on the left before cutting inside his marker and driving a low shot at goal. It's an awkward height, bouncing just in front of the 'keeper, but he deals with it well.
24'

Chance wasted

Kimmich bends a corner to the back post, where it's met by Upamecano. The big Frenchman heads scruffily wide when he really should make more of the opportunity.
22'

Feyenoord take the lead!

Feyenoord defender Smal sends a searching long ball over the Bayern defence and Kim makes a hash of dealing with it. It drops kindly into the path of Giménez, who takes a touch into the Bayern box before slamming a shot beyond Neuer. Fantastic finish!
20'

Hancko booked

Feyenoord skipper Hancko is the first player to go in the referee's book for a push from behind on a rampant Laimer. Bayern get a free kick wide on the right. It's whipped in by Kimmich but punched to safety by the goalkeeper.
camera-photo

That you, Vincent?

The flare smoke inside De Kuip just after kick off caused a brief delay in proceedings.
12'

Bayern on top

Kimmich fizzes in a corner and it's an awkward one for Bijlow, who has to punch it away as if its a shot at goal. Bayern hog the ball inside the Feyenoord half for a stretch.
10'

Feyenoord with the first chance

Davies is caught in possession inside the Bayern area and Giménez is gifted a chance to shoot from a tight angle. Thankfully for them, Upamecano is on hand to block behind for a corner.
6'

And we're off again...

Enough smoke has dispersed for the referee to re-start the game.
2'

Game stopped

The amount of smoke inside the stadium, caused by flares in the stands, prompts the referee to halt proceedings almost immediately.
1'

Peeeep!

Olise takes kick off in a smoke-filled De Kuip.

All to play for

Bayern could leap as high as third place in the standings with a win tonight. Feyenoord could climb into the top eight.

Gluttons for goals

Feyenoord have scored 14 goals and conceded 15 so far in this competition. No other side’s games in this season’s competition can match theirs for goals.

Dutch courage

Bayern are unbeaten in their last eight Champions League games against Dutch opponents, winning four and drawing four. Their last defeat to a nation from the country came back in 1999, when they lost to PSV.

Jamal Musiala on the ball

"I feel fresh and have energy," said the attacking prodigy who has recently been plagued by flu. "Feyenoord are very good at counterattacking and they want to play football. We have to work hard, not underestimate them and, above all, not give them time on the ball."
camera-photo

A win to take them into the top 8?

Bayern have twelve points (four wins, two defeats). They won their opening game against Dinamo Zagreb (9-2), then lost away to Aston Villa (0-1) and Barcelona (1-4). They followed that up with home wins against Benfica (1-0) and Paris (1-0) and an away win against Shakhtar Donetsk (5-1). While another win would theoretically see FCB move up to second place, Bayern's goal remains direct qualification for the last 16.

Rotterdam on course for the play-offs

The Dutch team are in tenth place in the league phase after six matchdays, with ten points. Feyenoord lost at home to Leverkusen (0-4) in the opening game, then beat Girona (3-2) and Benfica (3-1). The Rotterdam side then lost 3-1 to Salzburg, but staged a spectacular comeback against Manchester City, drawing 3-3. They followed that up with a 4-2 home win over Sparta Prague.

Vincent Kompany's view on Feyenoord

"This is a special away game. As ever, we want to win and put in a performance. I played against [Brian Priske] in my first year as a coach. We were both under a lot of pressure, but we had nice games. He has an attacking mindset - at least he did in Belgium. But obviously, in the end we all live by results. We go there full of motivation."
camera-photo

Brian Priske's view on Bayern

"It's another opportunity to get results. I love Feyenoord and I love playing against top clubs. Bayern are a top side, we have to be ready for that."

Bayern's Kompany men

What makes the Bundesliga leaders and Champions League contenders so good right now? We put Vincent Kompany's team under the tactical spotlight.
camera-photo

Tale of the tape

Somewhat surprisingly, this will be only Feyenoord and Bayern's third meeting in UEFA competition. The sides met in the 2001/02 Champions League group stage, playing out a 2-2 draw in Rotterdam before Bayern won the return fixture 3-1 with a Giovane Elber brace.
camera-photo

Goals galore

The Bavarian giants are also among the top scorers in the Champions League, having netted 17 times in their six tournament matches to date. Last time out, a 5-1 against Shakhtar Donetsk propelled Bayern up to 10th in the standings - one place behind Borussia Dortmund - and has the six-time European champions just outside the automatic qualifying spots for the Round of 16 with two league phase games to go.
