Emre Can extends contract with Borussia Dortmund by another year
Despite suffering a long-term injury during last month’s Der Klassiker, Emre Can has had his Borussia Dortmund contract extended by a further year through to June 2027.
When Can suffered a cruciate ligament tear in Dortmund’s loss against Bayern Munich, much was made about how the future would look for the 32-year-old, given that his contract was due to expire this summer, but that doubt has now been put to rest.
Ahead of Dortmund’s 3-2 win over Hamburg on Saturday, it was confirmed that Can and BVB had agreed on an extension to the captain’s contract that will see him enter his eighth year with the club in the summer.
“I’m delighted to remain part of Borussia Dortmund," said Can. "BVB is a special club, and I’d like to express my sincere thanks for the support. My aim is to recover as quickly as possible, get back on the pitch with my teammates and enjoy success with the club.”

With Can now having played 220 competitive matches for the club, and having proved a natural team leader, the Dortmund hierarchy were only too pleased to have him extend.
“Emre is our captain and a true role model," said sporting director Lars Ricken. "He is a leader who leads by example and always puts the team first. We made it clear shortly after his serious injury that we wanted to continue supporting him because he is a key player for Borussia Dortmund.
"Now it is important for Emre to focus entirely on his recovery, and we look forward to seeing him back on the pitch.”
BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl was also full of praise for the German international:
“Emre is an important part of our team both on and off the pitch. We recognise his importance in the dressing room and the experience he brings to our squad. We will support him closely on his road to recovery and have every confidence that he will return in top form.”
When Can will return on the pitch remains to be seen, with BVB’s captain likely to be out for many more months, but clearly, the value Can offers off the pitch is nearly as important as his ability on it.
