Borussia Dortmund substitute Carney Chukwuemeka's 96th-minute equaliser denied Eintracht Frankfurt victory after Mahmoud Dahoud seemed to have secured all three points for the hosts in a remarkable first Bundesliga game of 2026.

Goals: 0-1 Beier 10' (assist: Ryerson), 1-1 Uzun (pen. 22'), 1-2 Nmecha 68', 2-2 Ebnoutalib 71' (assist: Kalimuendo), 3-2 Dahoud (90'+2), 3-3 Chukwuemeka 90'+6

Second-placed Dortmund arrived at Deutsche Bank Park having lost just once in their previous 23 league matches, while Frankfurt were looking to close the four-point gap to the top four. The hosts handed a debut to Younes Ebnoutalib, who had recently made the switch from Elversberg where he had been Bundesliga 2's top scorer with 12 goals in 17 appearances during the first half of 2025/26.

The match began at a frenetic pace despite the wet conditions, with both sides creating early chances. Dortmund struck first in the 10th minute with a superbly crafted goal. Nico Schlotterbeck delivered a pinpoint diagonal ball to Julian Ryerson on the right wing, who controlled brilliantly before sending a sharp cross into the box. Maximilian Beier timed his run perfectly and guided a first-time finish past Kauã Santos at the near post.

Frankfurt responded well to going behind, with Can Uzun forcing a sprawling save from Kobel. The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute when Serhou Guirassy caught Robin Koch while attempting to clear a throw-in. Uzun stepped up confidently and sent Kobel the wrong way to level the scores.

Second-half fireworks

The second period began with Frankfurt on the front foot, as Younes Ebnoutalib headed narrowly wide from Hugo Larsson's cross. Ansgar Knauff then forced another good save from Kobel after being played in by Ebnoutalib.

Dortmund weathered the storm and regained their lead in the 68th minute when Felix Nmecha collected the ball on the edge of the box and fired a shot that took a slight deflection off Larsson before nestling in the net via the inside of the post.

However, Frankfurt delivered an immediate response. Just three minutes later, new signing Arnaud Kalimuendo, who had replaced Uzun, set up fellow debutant Ebnoutalib, who held off Niklas Süle before hammering a powerful shot past Kobel to make it 2-2.

Late drama in the rain

Both teams made changes as they pushed for a winner, with Mario Götze and Mahmoud Dahoud entering the fray for Frankfurt, while Dortmund introduced Fabio Silva, Karim Adeyemi, Emre Can and Chukwuemeka.

As the match entered stoppage time, Frankfurt thought they had secured victory when former Dortmund midfielder Dahoud swept a fine finish in off the upright in the 92nd minute, sparking wild celebrations from coach Dino Toppmöller.

But Dortmund refused to be beaten. In the 96th minute, Marcel Sabitzer delivered a cross from the right which Chukwuemeka managed to bundle home after the ball bounced off Rasmus Kristensen and back into his path. It was a fitting end to a breathless encounter that showcased the Bundesliga at its entertaining best.

Player of the match: Younes Ebnoutalib

Ebnoutalib could hardly have asked for a more impressive debut in Frankfurt colours.

The former Elversberg forward was a constant threat throughout the match. He showcased his aerial ability with a close header that narrowly missed the target early in the second half, before displaying his clinical finishing with a powerful strike to bring Frankfurt level at 2-2.

His hold-up play and movement caused problems for the Dortmund defence all evening, and his combination with substitute Kalimuendo for his goal highlighted his ability to link up with teammates. No surprise he was voted Man of the Match with 45% of the votes.
