Edin Džeko set for return to Schalke?
Schalke head coach Miron Muslić has hinted that veteran forward Edin Džeko could be in line for a return to the club.
Džeko joined Schalke from Fiorentina in January this year on a six-month deal and became an instant hit, registering six goals and three assists in 11 Bundesliga 2 appearances to help the club earn promotion back to the top flight.
His contract expired at the end of June, and the 40-year-old forward is currently on vacation after featuring for Bosnia and Herzegovina at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
And while Džeko is without a club at present, Muslić has indicated that could be about to change.
Speaking after Schalke rounded out their training camp in Stubaital, Austria with a 3-1 win against Japanese top-flight outfit Fagiano Okayama on Saturday evening, the 43-year-old tactician said with a grin: "We'll still bring in one or two players with character."
Asked by journalists whether he was specifically referring to Džeko, Muslić repeated the line with a smile.
Schalke currently have Moussa Sylla, Junior Adamu and Kenan Karaman among their forward options, but Džeko's experience and nose for goal could prove vital in their bid to stay up.
The Royal Blues begin their Bundesliga campaign away to Augsburg on Sunday 30 August.
