Edin Džeko suffers 'deep cut' to head in Schalke's defeat to Mainz
Veteran Schalke striker Edin Džeko suffered a deep cut to his head during Schalke’s Bundesliga defeat at home to Mainz on Saturday afternoon.
Džeko, 40, sustained the injury in a collision with Mainz defender Kacper Potulski shortly before the hour mark of the 1-0 reverse at the Veltins-Arena.
The former Bosnia and Herzegovina international had to be replaced by Hwang Hee-chan, with Schalke confirming on Sunday that the cut required “several stitches”.

The Royal Blues did not reveal how long Džeko will be out for but wished the frontman a “speedy recovery”.
The former Wolfsburg striker has featured in five of Schalke’s six Bundesliga games since signing a one-year contract extension over the summer, starting on two occasions.
He played a key role in the Royal Blues’ return to the top flight last term, registering six goals and three assists in 11 Bundesliga 2 appearances.
Schalke travel to Cologne in their next game on Saturday 24 October.
