Czechia 1-1 South Africa
Goals: 1-0 Sadílek 6' (assist: Sojka), 1-1 Mokoena (83' pen.)
Czechia and South Africa arrived at Atlanta Stadium in desperate need of a win after both had suffered opening-day defeats.
For the South Africans, suspended players Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane were unavailable, while Czech head coach Miroslav Koubek made five changes to the side beaten by South Korea, including bringing in Hoffenheim trio Hložek, Coufal and Hranáč alongside Bayer Leverkusen striker Schick.
Sadilek strikes early
Czechia made the brighter start and were rewarded for their early pressure in the sixth minute. Michal Sadilek opened the scoring, taking Alexandr Sojka's lay-off and firing it low past Ronwen Williams with his left foot.
Schick had already gone close in the first minute, heading wide from a deep cross, and Sadílek himself had been denied moments earlier from a corner. South Africa, meanwhile, were initially content to sit deep and defend.
South Africa grow into game
After the early setback, South Africa gradually worked their way into the contest. Oswin Appollis tried his luck from distance around the 12th minute, with the effort deflected wide for a corner, and Thalente Mbatha fired over from long range shortly after.
The match became more even as the half progressed, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances in the final third. In first-half stoppage time, Thapelo Maseko had a shot blocked inside the box, as the Czechs headed into the break with a slender 1-0 advantage.
Czechs push for a second after break
Czechia came out with renewed intent after the interval and almost doubled their lead immediately.
Vladimír Darida's shot was blocked, before Lukáš Červ's follow-up was tipped over the bar by Williams. Schick then headed straight at the goalkeeper from a corner.
Mokoena penalty earns South Africa point
With the Czechs sitting deeper to protect their lead, South Africa pressed for an equaliser. The decisive moment arrived in the 81st minute when Maseko's drive struck the arm of Šulc inside the box, and referee Tori Penso pointed to the spot.
Mokoena stepped up and sent Matěj Kovář the wrong way, firing low into the bottom-left corner to level at 1-1 in the 83rd minute.
In a frantic finale, both sides went in search of a winner — Relebohile Mofokeng tested Kovář, Evidence Makgopa shot straight at the goalkeeper, and Lukáš Provod fired wide — but neither could find a decisive blow as the match ended all square.
