It was on Matchday 9 of the Bundesliga this season that Borussia Mönchengladbach finally ended their lengthy wait for a top-tier victory, with St. Pauli on the wrong end of a significant Foals' backlash. The two are set to face off once more in the DFB Cup on Tuesday (kick-off 6pm CET).

Haris Tabaković scored twice in a 4-0 win at the Millerntor-Stadion on the first day of November, as Eugen Polanski's side continued their revival following a DFB Cup second-round triumph at home to Karlsruhe

"Since we've turned this corner, everything feels a whole lot better," said USMNT international Joe Scally, who helped his team extend their unbeaten run to five games with a goalless draw at home to RB Leipzig on Friday. "You approach each game with more and more positivity, and you get more enjoyment from playing as a result."

Conversely, that loss to Borussia helped pile more misery on the lowly Boys in Brown, whose only victory in their last ten games was a penalty shoot-out triumph against Hoffenheim in the second round of the cup - although they did deliver a promising display in defeat to Bayern Munich on Matchday 12.

"The situation isn't great, that's obvious, but we've seen some positive aspects and we have to keep working on them," Pauli coach Alexander Blessin said recently. "We can only do that together and with conviction."

Gladbach - the story so far

The Foals struggled past fifth-tier Atlas Delmenhorst in round one, edging out a narrow 3-2 victory as they had to take the lead three times to see off their underdog opposition. Gladbach produced a more assured display in the second, brushing Karlsruhe aside 3-1 with goals from Shuto Machino, Nico Elvedi and Haris Tabaković sealing their progression to the third round.

Pauli - the story so far

The Kiezkicker haven't taken the easy route in the first two rounds, progressing through both via a penalty shoot-out. The first came away to Eintracht Norderstedt, over whom they triumphed 3-2 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. Against Hoffenheim in the second, they stormed to an early lead with a first-minute Wahl opener before being pegged back. Tied after 90 minutes, Kramarić gave the Sinsheimers a 2-1 advantage in extra-time, but a last-gasp equaliser from Pereira Lage sent them to penalties, which Pauli won 8-7.
