Borussia Mönchengladbach welcomed Hoffenheim to Borussia-Park on the final day of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season with very different objectives. For Hoffenheim, a win was essential to keep alive their hopes of a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2018/19.
For Gladbach, already safe, this was an opportunity to sign off in front of their home supporters.
Hoffenheim start brightly but Bolin strikes
Hoffenheim began the match with clear intent, pressing high and winning an early corner within seconds of kick-off. Andrej Kramarić had the best chance of the opening exchanges in the seventh minute, ghosting into the Gladbach penalty area unmarked after a superb ball from Fisnik Asllani, but Moritz Nicolas saved with his feet.
Against the run of play, Gladbach took the lead in the 14th minute. Philipp Sander launched a long throw into the box, which Hoffenheim only partially cleared. Wael Mohya chested the ball down into the path of Hugo Bolin, who caught Oliver Baumann off guard with a snapshot into the bottom corner.
Gladbach doubled their lead in the 23rd minute through Haris Tabaković, who's on loan from Hoffenheim. After a flowing move, Yannik Engelhardt played a low cross into the area. Mohya swung and missed, but the ball fell perfectly for Tabaković, who finished emphatically past Baumann.
Lemperle's red card ends Hoffenheim's hopes
The second half began in dramatic fashion. Just five seconds after the restart, Tim Lemperle pressed high and fouled Kevin Diks, earning a second yellow card and leaving Hoffenheim with ten men.
The VAR also intervened in the 64th minute to disallow what would have been Tabaković's second goal of the afternoon, ruling him offside in the build-up but Diks put the result beyond doubt in the 81st minute with a stunning strike from distance.
Robin Hack then completed the scoring in the first minute of added time, dispossessing Leon Avdullahu before racing through on goal and sliding the ball under Baumann - A perfect end to the season for the Foals.
Man of the Match: Haris Tabaković
Haris Tabaković was voted Man of the Match with 44 per cent of the vote. The striker, on loan from Hoffenheim, scored Gladbach's second goal and led the team in shots with three attempts on goal.
He was a constant threat throughout the first half, winning fouls and holding up play effectively. His goal against his parent club was the defining moment of the first half which helped Gladbach take firm control of the match.
