Karl-Heinz Riedle and Paul Lambert - two members of Dortmund’s 1997 UEFA Champions League-winning team - donned the famous black and yellow of BVB, while Luis Garcia, Dirk Kuyt and Ian Rush lined up for Liverpool.
Mladen Petric, who represented Dortmund between 2007 and 2008, equalised for BVB to cancel out Salif Diao’s opener. Diao added a second, before Ewerton - a 2001/02 Bundesliga winner with the Black-Yellows under Matthias Sammer - levelled.
It was Liverpool who the 14,839 spectators in attendance watched raise the replica Champions League trophy aloft at full-time, though, thanks to Robbie Fowler’s match-winning penalty.
Dortmund and Liverpool will meet again on 19 July, when the current teams face off in a pre-season friendly in Indianapolis, USA.
