Borussia Dortmund make it 12 points from 12 for just the fourth time in their history
Borussia Dortmund's magnificent start to the season has been so good that they have a maximum of 12 points from 12 for the first time since 2015, and for only the fourth time in the club's history.
An away game against VfB Stuttgart was always going to be tough, regardless of the Swabians' slow start to the campaign, but it was a test that Dortmund passed with flying colours to move to the summit of the Bundesliga table.
Top of the table is also where they will stay for at least the next three weeks, with a lengthy international break coming after the conclusion of the weekend’s fixtures.

Now, of course, we’re only four games into the new season, but things are certainly looking positive for Die Schwarzgelben. Maximilian Beier’s winner against Stuttgart means that BVB are the only team in the league that have picked up all 12 points from their first four games, with champions Bayern Munich having been held 0-0 by newly-promoted Schalke on Matchday 2.
This is just the fourth time ever that Dortmund have picked up maximum points from their first four Bundesliga games, and it is something that they haven’t achieved since the 2015/16 season when current England head coach Thomas Tuchel was at the helm.
Furthermore, the last time Dortmund finished a complete matchday top of the pile was all the way back in May 2023, when BVB led the competition heading into the final game of the season, only to slip up against Mainz, allowing Bayern to snatch the title in dramatic fashion.

Speaking after the game, Niko Kovač was full of praise for Beier and his team: "Life writes the most wonderful stories. Maxi isn’t part of the national team, but today he’s the one who’s scored the goal.
"Ultimately, that just goes to show that we’ve got a brilliant squad. He can play anywhere; with him, I always know 100 per cent what I’m getting. And today, he’s rewarded himself.”
The last time that Dortmund won the Bundesliga was the 2011/12 season as Jürgen Klopp, and BVB won back-to-back titles. Dortmund’s next game is at home to Werder Bremen on 9 October, and not too far away on the horizon lies a potentially mouthwatering Der Klassiker clash in Munich on the night of Halloween.
