Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 HamburgGoals: 0-1 Viera 61’ (assist: Capaldo), 1-1 Remberg o.g. 78’Penalty missed: Schick 25’
Leverkusen entered the final day of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season knowing that only a win, combined with results elsewhere, could secure Champions League football. Kasper Hjulmand's side, sitting sixth, made just one change from their previous outing, with Malik Tillman replacing the injured Christian Kofane.
Hamburg, meanwhile, were looking to finish the season on a high. Merlin Polzin made three changes, most notably handing goalkeeper Sander Tangvik his club and Bundesliga debut, with Jordan Torunarigha and Rayan Philippe also coming into the starting eleven.
Leverkusen dominate but Tangvik stands firm
Leverkusen took control from the off, with Patrik Schick and Ibrahim Maza both going close early on after neat moves involving Exequiel Palacios and Alejandro Grimaldo.
Hamburg, however, were not without their own threat — Nicolas Capaldo headed against the woodwork from Philippe's cross in the 17th minute.
Maza then had a couple more good chances, but both times he was denied before Patrik Schick was tripped by Jordan Torunarigha inside the box. The Czech international stepped up himself, only to be denied by debutant Tangvik.
The Norwegian was once again needed just before the break as he reacted quickly to save Tillman's header.
Leverkusen push hard after the break
Leverkusen came out with renewed purpose after the interval, and went close on several occasions, but it was Hamburg that broke the deadlock through Vieira. Just minutes after forcing Mark Flekken into a superb save, Vieira worked himself space on the edge of the box before whipping an effort into the top corner.
Leverkusen continued to press and were rewarded in the 78th minute. Grimaldo whipped in a cross from a free-kick, which was met by Quansah. His header took a deflection off Nicolai Remberg's shoulder before dropping into the corner of the net to make it 1-1.
Despite both sides searching for a winner, neither side could make the breakthrough.
Man of the Match: Sander Tangvik
Tangvik was the standout performer on the day, earning the Man of the Match award with 52 per cent of the vote. Making his club and Bundesliga debut, the Norwegian goalkeeper produced a string of fine saves throughout the match, most notably denying Schick from the penalty spot in the 25th minute.
He also kept out efforts from Maza, Tillman and Grimaldo, and finished the match as the top-ranked player in the fantasy manager standings with 444 points. His display was a remarkable way to mark a first appearance in Germany's top flight.
