Wagner, 38, was appointed over the summer and enjoyed an impressive start to his tenure with a 3-1 win against Freiburg.

However, Augsburg won just two of their 11 league games that followed, drawing one and losing eight. They also exited the DFB Cup in the second round, losing 1-0 at home to Bundesliga 2's Bochum.

A 3-0 defeat against Hoffenheim on Matchday 12 handed Augsburg their ninth loss of the campaign across all competitions and left them just two points clear of the promotion/relegation play-off.

"I have always approached my role at FCA with great energy and passion. We wanted to achieve a lot together, but unfortunately we were unable to do so in the short time available," Wagner said. "I would like to thank everyone involved for their trust and cooperation. I wish the club all the best for the future."

Augsburg sporting director Benni Weber added: "Sandro has initiated important processes in recent months and worked with great commitment for FCA, for which we thank him. As a club, we are convinced that we are on the right track and will continue to pursue this path. Now it's time to find stability and pick up points in the upcoming games."

Manuel Baum will take charge on an interim basis until the winter break, with Bayer Leverkusen up next. The 46-year-old previously coached the club between December 2016 and April 2019.
