Bayern Munich's historic season hit an unexpected roadblock as Augsburg ended their 27-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga with a stunning 2-1 comeback victory at the Allianz Arena.
The record champions had been in imperious form, amassing 16 wins and two draws from their opening 18 matches with a remarkable goal difference of +57 – the best start in Bundesliga history.
Vincent Kompany's side had scored an incredible 71 goals, averaging nearly four per game, but they were unable to maintain their unbeaten streak against a determined Augsburg side.
Ito heads Bayern in front
Bayern dominated possession in the opening exchanges but struggled to create clear opportunities against a well-organised Augsburg defence.
The breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when Hiroki Ito rose highest to meet Michael Olise's perfectly delivered corner, heading past Finn Dahmen to give the hosts the lead.
Bayern pushed for a second with Luis Díaz particularly active down the left flank, forcing Dahmen into a save in the 26th minute. Harry Kane had two attempts just before half-time, but Augsburg nearly equalised in stoppage time when Robin Fellhauer's ferocious shot cannoned back off the crossbar with Jonas Urbig beaten.
Augsburg's second-half turnaround
The visitors emerged from the interval with renewed purpose, with Alexis Claude-Maurice forcing Urbig into action early in the second half. Kompany responded to Augsburg's growing threat by introducing Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala on the hour mark, but the momentum had shifted.
After Jonathan Tah received a yellow card for handball in the 73rd minute, Arthur Chaves rose highest to head home the equaliser from Mert Kömür's corner two minutes later.
Bayern were rocked, and Augsburg capitalised on their uncertainty in the 81st minute when Dimitrios Giannoulis combined brilliantly with Claude-Maurice before delivering a perfect pass for Han-Noah Massengo, who fired low past Urbig to complete the comeback.
Kompany's side desperately searched for an equaliser, but Olise's curling effort in stoppage time struck the crossbar as Augsburg held on for a famous victory.
Man of the Match: Han-Noah Massengo
Massengo was instrumental in Augsburg's historic triumph at the Allianz Arena. The midfielder not only scored the winning goal with a composed finish from Giannoulis's cutback, but his all-round performance epitomised Augsburg's fighting spirit.
He recorded the highest pass efficiency among his teammates (1.97), won 11 challenges, and covered an impressive 12.4 kilometres – more than any other Augsburg player.
Massengo's ability to transition from defence to attack was crucial in helping the visitors exploit Bayern's vulnerability on the counter, while his positioning and timing for the winning goal demonstrated his footballing intelligence. His contribution was rightly recognised as he claimed the Man of the Match award with 32 percent of the votes.
