Canada coach Jesse Marsch expects Alphonso Davies to make World Cup
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch is confident Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies will feature at the FIFA World Cup 2026 this summer, despite being sidelined with a hamstring injury since early May.
Davies suffered the injury in Bayern’s UEFA Champions League semi-final second-leg against Paris Saint-Germain, leaving him in a race against time to be fit for the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the USA.
But Marsch, who included Davies in Canada’s training camp squad this week, expects his captain to play some part at the World Cup, even if he fails to prove his fitness in time for the Canucks’ opener against Bosnia & Herzegovina on 12 June.
“I think Alphonso will play in the World Cup,” said the former RB Leipzig boss, whose side face Uzbekistan and the Republic of Ireland in pre-tournament friendlies on 1 and 5 June. “Alphonso will be here with us on 31st May.
“We spoke with Bayern and thought that the best thing for him was to continue his initial recovery treatment until the 28th, then we’re giving him a few days to get away. I don’t think he’ll be quite ready on 12 June, but we’ll see.”
Davies last appeared for Canada in a 2-1 Concacaf Nations League victory over USA in March last year, when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury which kept him out of action until December.

The 25-year-old has won 58 senior caps for his country to date, registering 18 assists and 15 goals - including an early opener in an eventual 4-1 defeat to Croatia at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
He made 13 appearances in the Bundesliga in 2025/26, as well as a further eight in the Champions League and two in the DFB Cup.
