Alexander Nübel to leave VfB Stuttgart after three-year loan
Alexander Nübel will return to Bayern Munich following the end of his three-year loan stay at VfB Stuttgart, the Swabians have confirmed.
The 29-year-old, who was recently included in Germany's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, initially joined Stuttgart on a season-long loan in 2023 but, after extending his contract at Bayern in 2024, the temporary spell at the MHP Arena was extended for another 24 months.
Upon the announcement of his exit, Stuttgart sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth said, "Nübel has set standards over the past three years – both on and off the pitch, in terms of his sporting performance and character. Alex was always reliable, and VfB's positive development, culminating in their third consecutive appearance in a European competition, is inextricably linked to him.

"From day one, Alex identified with VfB and the people of the region, and this, combined with his exceptional performances in goal, has naturally made him a particularly popular player with the fans."
Meanwhile, Alexander Nübel himself said, "It was a sensational time at VfB Stuttgart in every respect. My family and I had three wonderful years in Stuttgart, and I felt very much at home from day one. The team and the fans showed me a great deal of appreciation and respect, for which I am very grateful.
"It was also a very successful time from a sporting perspective: We qualified for international competition three times, experienced unforgettable evenings in the Champions League and Europa League, and celebrated a very special moment with the DFB Cup victory, which will remain in my memory forever.”
Since his arrival, Nübel made 129 competitive appearances for Stuttgart, helping them twice qualify for the UEFA Champions League, while also between the sticks as the team won the 2025 DFB Cup. The custodian managed to keep 38 clean sheets in all competitions along the way.
He has also picked up three caps for Germany during his time in Baden-Württemberg. Nübel is under contract with Bayern until 2029.
