Full-time: Paderborn 0-1 Freiburg

Julian Schuster's men manage to hold onto their narrow lead to claim a hard-fought away win in Paderborn. The hosts gave a much better account of themselves going forward in the second half, but despite long stretches of prolonged offensive pressure, they were unable to convert their chances into goals. Victory sees Freiburg extend their winning streak at the start of this campaign to five consecutive games in all competitions.

Matanović denied late on

Grifo floats a free-kick up for Treu, who brings the ball down for Matanović. The Croatian makes space for a shot and smashes it low towards the bottom right corner, but Noll gets down well to deny him.

Stoppage time

A minimum of four additional minutes have been indicated here. Can Paderborn conjure up an equaliser, or will Freiburg hold on to make it two wins from their opening two games?
85'

Acrobatic attempt

Hansen whips in a cross from the right, and Castaneda does excellently to improvise with the ball behind him, firing an acrobatic volley goalwards. Nevertheless, Backhaus is equal to the attempt and makes the save for Freiburg.
83'

Double changes on both sides

For the hosts, there are two like-for-like changes as Marino and Sticker take the places of Pieringer and ter Horst, whilst Gotō and Yilmaz are introduced for Freiburg to help see out their advantage.
78'

Castaneda in the way

Eggestein finds Suzuki on the edge of the Paderborn penalty area, but Castaneda is there to block the subsequent shot attempt from the Japanese midfielder.
74'

Changes on both sides

For Freiburg, Julian Schuster makes a double change as he introduces Grifo and Kübler for Scherhant and Beste. Batista Meier also replaces Ulrich for Paderborn. Will the substitutes make the difference for their sides?

Well read

Beste drives up the right flank before spotting Matanović in space to his left. The Croatian forward would've been clean through on goal, but for a vital intervention from ter Horst, who read the pass and cleared it away.

xGoals reflecting the scoreline

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Despite Paderborn's improved attacking effort this second half, the xG values indicate they haven't quite tested Backhaus enough so far this afternoon. Freiburg, on the other hand, are good value for their lead.

Tigges again

Tigges receives Castañeda's pass following Curda's long ball, but his effort drifts wide left. Paderborn are getting closer.
65'

Could've gone anywhere

Scherhant sends Makengo through to the byline. The left-back's cross is too close to Noll, who saves with his feet, but his touch nearly guides it the ball in at the far post. However, it bounces just wide for a Freiburg corner.
64'

He thought he'd scored!

Ulrich exchanges passes with Curda before unleashing a low shot towards the near post, which catches the goalkeeper by surprise, but his effort whistles just wide of the left post.
63'

Snapshot

Curda finds Ulrich, who threads it through to Pieringer, but the striker, who finds himself isolated up top, fires his effort wide to the left.
60'

Too heavy

Freiburg fashion themselves a big chance. The Breisgauers make headway up the left flank on a counter-attack, from where they shift it to Matanović in the middle. The forward moves it on to Treu, who plays it to Suzuki, before the Japanese international looks to send Scherhant clean through, but his pass is just slightly overhit and the No.7 can't get on the end of it.
59'

Engelhardt sees yellow

Now it's Engelhardt's turn to go into the book for his challenge on Castaneda.
58'

Paderborn improving

The hosts have already taken as many shots on goal (four) as they managed in the entire first half.
56'

Lienhart booked

Freiburg's No.3 sees yellow for a challenge behind on Curda.
55'

Double attempt for Tigges

Tigges collects Ulrich's pass from the left just inside the Freiburg box. His initial effort is blocked by Engelhardt before Tigges sends his follow-up wide to the right. Better from Paderborn in the second half here.
53'

Too heavy

Another good move for Paderborn sees Pieringer look to release Tigges clean through for a one-on-one with Backhaus, but Eggestein times his challenge to perfection from behind to deny the substitute a shot on the Freiburg goal.
51'

Golden chance for Paderborn!

Castañeda dispossesses Engelhardt right on the edge of Freiburg's penalty area. He plays the ball through for Pieringer, who tries to round Backhaus, but the Freiburg custodian does superbly to get a fingertip on the ball and take it away from the Paderborn striker!
50'

Scherhant takes

Freiburg's No.7 steps up to go direct from the free-kick. He gets it over the wall, but can only curl his effort just past the left post. So close to a second!
50'

Ter Horst booked

The Paderborn defender goes into the book for a trip on Makengo, which provides Freiburg with a free-kick from a very good position right on the edge of the hosts' penalty area.
47'

Miscontrolled

A good chance for Paderborn fizzles out as Castañeda drills a low pass to the recently introduced Tigges, who can't bring the ball under control and sees it roll under his foot for a Freiburg throw-in.
46'

Back under way!

Paderborn get the ball rolling for the second half here. Ralf Kettemann has made one change at the break, introducing Tigges up top in place of debutant Philippe.
Kick-off!

Half-time: Paderborn 0-1 Freiburg

At the break, it's the visitors from the Black Forest who lead here in Paderborn. After a bright, end-to-end start, the hosts started to take control of the possession, but Freiburg consistently managed to produce both the superior quantity and quality of chances, ultimately taking the lead via Eggestein's 26th-minute rebound.

Freiburg lifted

After finding the go-ahead goal, Freiburg immediately look to add another. Eggestein picks out Beste, who lays it off to Treu. The full-back's cross picks out Matanović, but Noll is equal to the volleyed effort.
28'

Double figures

Incidentally, Eggestein is also already Freiburg's tenth different scorer in all competitions this term.

Eggestein fires Freiburg in front!

The visitors have broken the deadlock here. Scherhant cuts in off the left flank and picks Eggestein out with a low cross inside the box. The midfielder's shot is blocked but Engelhardt recovers the ball, electing to have a go himself. Engelhardt also sees his effort blocked, but the rebound falls back to Eggestein, who smashes home from close range. Freiburg continue their free-scoring start to the season, with Eggestein's strike marking the Breisgauer's 17th so far in all competitions in the current campaign.

Noll in control

Paderborn's goalkeeper has had the most touches and has made the most passes of any player so far. He has also already stopped four shots.
20'

Deft from Scherhant

The winger drives at ter Horst, dumbfounding him with an excellent piece of skill. The Paderborn defender does manage to get a touch on the ball, which sends it on its way towards the hosts' goal, but Castaneda rushes across to sweep it behind for a corner, which Freiburg can't capitalise on.

Chances on both sides

Neither Paderborn nor Freiburg have been afraid of pulling the trigger so far here, but the breakthrough goal remains elusive for both sides.

Paderborn scream for a penalty

Up the other end, Pieringer slips Curda through into the box, who goes down under the challenge of Lienhart. The home side protest to the referee, who dismisses the claim.

Freiburg combine well up the left flank. Scherhant plays Makengo down the line, but Curda tracks his man and makes an excellent intervention to stop the cross, whilst managing to avoid conceding a corner in the process.

Matanović looking lively

The Freiburg forward has been in amongst the action at both ends of the pitch in the opening phase here.
7'

Quickfire corners

Scherhant swings the set piece in from the left, but Noll comes off his goal-line to punch the ball behind, conceding another corner. This time, it's Beste from the right, but Freiburg don't manage to make anything of it.
6'

Matanović lets fly

Ginter finds the forward on the edge of the Paderborn box, who lashes a low effort towards the bottom left corner. Noll rushes across to his right to make a good stop, however, tipping it round the post to concede the first corner of the game.
3'

Paderborn hit back

The hosts immediately counterattack and have a good chance of their own up the other end. From the left, Scheller picks out Pieringer with a pass, but his shot is saved down low by Backhaus. Matanović then gets back to block Ulrich's follow-up attempt.
2'

Early triple chance

Freiburg start on the front foot. Beste delivers a cross into the box, and Matanović's effort is blocked. Eggestein tries his luck with the rebound, but a Paderborn defender also throws himself in the way of that one. Scherhant then picks up the loose ball and threads a pass through to Beste, who strikes it with his right foot from inside the box, but Scheller gets across to make the block. Promising start!

Watch: Paderborn ready for first home game back in the Bundesliga

Ralf Kettemann on facing Freiburg

"Freiburg are on a bit of a run at the moment. They're a young but experienced side, and they look very solid and disciplined. They've been very consistent for a number of years now. It's going to be a very tough challenge."

Julian Schuster on facing Paderborn

"We're ready for anything. We're prepared for them to sit deep, but also ready for them to press high. If you manage to play through their press, they reorganise quickly and become very compact again. With the schedule we've got coming up after the international break, we've settled into a routine that helps us focus on what matters most."

Eleven Paderborn players made their Bundesliga debuts on Matchday 1, eight of them in the starting XI. At kick-off, the line-up had a combined 98 Bundesliga appearances between them, 89 of which belonged to Marvin Pieringer.
