Goal back!

It's a debut goal for Stalmach, who gets his head on the end of an inswinging corner and beats Backhaus from close range.

No consolation

Füllkrug races clear of Ginter and suddenly finds himself one-on-one with Backhaus, but the veteran striker can't find the target with his effort.

Hat-trick!

What an afternoon this is turning out to be for Freiburg and Suzuki. Bremen lose possession in a dangerous area and the hosts take full advantage as Matanović races clear before unselfishly squaring the ball for the Japanese attacker, who slots home to complete his treble.

Wide from Reis

Bremen's summer signing - who was booked moments after Suzuki's second goal - cuts inside and drags a low shot narrowly wide of the near post. Much better from Werder!
52'

Down and out?

Surely, there is no way back for the visitors now. Bremen have created little in the final third since the opening few minutes of the match - and remain under heavy pressure as Freiburg chase a fourth.

Suzuki makes it three!

It's another smart finish from Suzuki, but it's brilliant play from Scherhant down the left. The Dutchman beats his marker for pace before dinking the ball into the centre, where Suzuki is left with a simple finish for his first Bundesliga brace!

Substitution

Half-time: Freiburg 2-0 Bremen

There was little to choose between the sides in the early stages, but Freiburg improved as the half wore on and thoroughly deserve their two-goal lead at the break. Long way back for Werder from here.

It's two!

Lovely goal! Matanović collects Ginter's pass on the turn before sending a venomous effort into the far corner from the corner of the box. Freiburg have a two-goal cushion!

Blocked by Füllkrug

Friedl fouls Matanović and Freiburg have another free-kick in a decent position. Scherhant steps up, but his effort is blocked by Füllkrug.
40'

Over from Beste!

That wasn't far away at all. Beste pulls the trigger from around 25 metres out, sending the ball narrowly over Hein's crossbar.
38'

Marauding run

Scherhant beats two Bremen defenders down the left-hand side before swinging a teasing ball into the box, but the Dutchman's delivery is cleared to safety.
35'

Freiburg dominating

That goal appears to have boosted the home side's confidence as we enter the final 10 minutes of the first half. Schuster's side are pinging the ball around inside the Werder half, trying to unpick the Bremen backline and fashion an opportunity to double their advantage.

Two corners in quick succession

Matanović's effort takes a deflection off Friedl on its way behind. Beste's first delivery is headed away for another corner, but Engelhardt miscues his effort from Scherhant's delivery.

Ginter effort drifts wide

A prolonged spell of Freiburg possession ends in Ginter letting fly from around 30 metres out, but the defender's shot rolls well wide of the left-hand post.

Freiburg pressure

This is a good spell for the home side but Werder are defending very well so far.

Pieper in the way

Beste's corner is only half cleared and the loose ball falls to Matanović, whose close-range effort is blocked by the Bremen defender.

Matanović denied

Lienhart swings in a cross from the left and Matanović rises highest to direct a header towards goal, but Hein is equal to it.
12'

Close!

Grüll is heavily involved again, getting inside from the left flank before training to squeeze a shot inside the near post. The ball flies wide, but it wasn't too far away.
10'

Visitors settling

Njinmah and Reis combine to tee up Grüll, who gets his shot away this time but sends it wide of the post. Pieper then shoots straight at Backhaus from distance as Werder begin to flex their attacking muscle.
7'

First Werder attack

Njinmah runs into space down the right-hand side before swinging the ball into the centre. Grüll can't quite sort his feet out quickly enough and Freiburg regain possession.
5'

Early free-kick

Friedl trips Matanović around 25 metres out. Beste goes straight for goal from the free-kick but fires his effort high over the crossbar.
3'

Bright Freiburg start

Makengo's long ball finds Suzuki, who tries to pick out Scherhant on the edge of the box. However, the 23-year-old can't get the ball under control and Werder manage to clear their lines.

More on that Freiburg team

The home side make four changes to the team that defeated Motherwell in the UEFA Conference League play-offs in midweek. Treu, Günter and Rosenfelder make way for Kübler, Makengo and Lienhart in defence, while Beste is preferred to Irié up front.

More on that Bremen team

Werder make three changes from the side that started their DFB Cup victory against LSK Hansa last weekend. Hein replaces Schlager in goal, while Grüll and summer signing Chuki (pictured) come in for Mbangula and Stage, who has been ruled out for several months with a thigh injury.

Julian Schuster on facing Bremen

“Werder are an exciting team against whom we have to prepare for thoroughly. They bring a different level of quality to that which we saw against Motherwell and will try to keep the things that have worked so far [under Thioune], whilst also quickly adding new elements to their game.”

Daniel Thioune on facing Freiburg

“Freiburg have developed in an incredible way. We’re facing a team that is almost equally strong in every position. On top of that, they’ve been in Europe consistently in recent years and showed last night that they’re already very strong at managing games. Freiburg are operating at close to 100% in all areas. But we also know that they can run into problems if we play very bravely in possession and attack spaces that are difficult to defend.”

Three in three for Freiburg?

Freiburg and Bremen meet on Matchday 1 for the third time this weekend, with Die Breisgauer winning on both previous occasions (3-2 in 1996 and 3-0 in 2001).

Freiburg win again

The Black Forest club are also into the next round of the cup, cruising to a 5-1 win at third-tier Fortuna Düsseldorf. Julian Schuster's side only led 1-0 at the break, but the introductions of Derry Scherhant and Igor Matanović - who went on to score twice - sparked the visitors into life.

Last time out - Bremen

Returning for his third spell, Niclas Füllkrug was among the goals as Werder secured a 3-0 victory over Lüneburger SK Hansa to book their place in the DFB Cup second round.

Watch: Freiburg 1-0 Bremen - previous meeting

Jan-Niklas Beste earned the Breisgau club a narrow home win on Matchday 21 of the 2025/26 season.

Freiburg on a roll

The Black Forest club have won their last four games against Bremen, with the last defeat coming in 2023/24.

Freiburg in full swing

Julian Schuster's men were the first Bundesliga side to return to competitive action for 2026/27, beginning the season last Thursday in Scotland for their UEFA Conference League play-off first leg. Matthias Ginter scored twice and debutant Keisuke Goto added a third in a 3-1 win over 10-man Motherwell. The return leg in Germany is this Thursday.
