xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Not much separates the two sides in terms of xG, but Bremen lead on the scoreboard.

Hamburg team news

Merlin Polzin has made three changes to the team that were comfortably beaten 4-0 by Stuttgart. Daniel Elfadli, Fabio Baldé and Rayan Philippe all come out, with Baldé out of the squad altogether, while Miro Muheim, Nicolas Capaldo and Robert Glatzel all come in. Meanwhile, centre-back Vušković is missing for a second straight game.

Bremen team news

Daniel Thioune has made four changes to the Bremen side that were beaten at Cologne on Matchday 29. Marco Friedl's red card in that game means Karim Coulibaly comes in, while Felix Agu, Leonardo Bittencourt and Marco Grüll make way. In their places come Cameron Puertas, Milošević and top scorer Jens Stage, who is again fit after missing two fixtures.

Thioune on facing Hamburg

"We lacked precision in the final third against Cologne, and I wasn't too impressed with the body language of some players. I want to see us have more bite on Saturday. We've been practising how we transition from defence to attack and vice versa. We expect HSV to sit back and look to hit us on the counter-attack. I'm not focusing on HSV's squad situation."
camera-photo

Polzin on facing Bremen

"Ever since Daniel Thioune took over, you can clearly see the way they want to play. They're a very good side with a lot of very good individual players, and they've already had to come through a few difficult moments this season. Time and again, they've managed to bounce back from them. They also look settled and united."
camera-photo

Daniel Thioune on coming up against old friend Merlin Polzin

"We had many years together, but it was never master and apprentice, we were always equals. We both developed in the youth teams at Osnabrück, we took over the first team. We shared lots of ideas with each other, because we have ideas of how a changing room can work. And we’ve now both had the huge opportunity to work in the Bundesliga. That’s something that unites us both, what divides us are the colours. But he’s showed in recent years how good he is as a coach. At the end of the day, I always wish him maximum success, but I also hope he finishes behind Werder Bremen in the table.”

Fan support at its finest

Over the course of Matchday 29, fans from several clubs unveiled impressive tifos, showing support for their teams. Here is a look at some of the best…

Familiar faces

Merlin Polzin worked as Daniel Thioune's assistant for Osnabrück's U17s in 2014/15. He also worked under the current Bremen boss at Hamburg, where he's remained since replacing Steffen Baumgart as head coach in November 2024.

The Friedl factor

Bremen's Marco Friedl is suspended following his red card against Cologne. Last season, the Green-Whites were two different teams without their captain. With the Austrian, they earned 44 points from 25 games (averaging 1.8 points per game). Without, they only managed seven points from an available nine (0.8 points per game).
