Freiburg down Celta Vigo

Mainz in red-hot form

The 05ers claimed a fifth consecutive win in all competitions after downing French outfit Strasbourg 2-0 at home in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League tie. Screamers from Kaishu Sano and Stefan Posch provided Mainz with not only victory in what was their first ever European quarter-final, but also left them very well positioned to reach the semis.

End of the line

Freiburg's 4-0 win over Mainz in the reverse fixture was their biggest of the season, as well as Mainz's heaviest defeat. Head coach Bo Henriksen lost his job just days later, with the 05ers bottom of the Bundesliga and winless since mid-September.

Curious stat

Among all clubs they've faced in the Bundesliga, Mainz have only recorded more wins in games with Hoffenheim and Augsburg (15 each) than against Freiburg (14). However, they haven't beaten the Breisgauer for five years (1-0 in Mainz in March 2021), with Freiburg winning three of the last nine in that period and the other six ending all square.
