Lucas Höler describes his goal

camera-photo

Full-time: Mainz 0-1 Freiburg

The final whistle goes! Freiburg secure all three points in Mainz courtesy of Lucas Höler's 47th-minute header and some resolute defending in the final stages. Mainz, who struck the woodwork in the first half, enjoyed periods of sustained pressure but failed to create sufficient viable goalscoring chances. With this hard-earned victory, the visitors move up to within two points of Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga table.

Half-time: Mainz 0-0 Freiburg

It's scoreless at the break at the Mewa Arena, and it's fair to say that the match has not quite come to life just yet. Both teams enjoyed periods of pressure without truly threatening, with the exception of Posch's impressive long-range effort that Atubolu just managed to tip onto the left-hand post. Hopefully we'll see some more goalmouth action in the second half!

Table talk

Mainz currently lie ninth, behind Freiburg in eighth, and they will move within a point of today's opponents in the event of a win. The visitors, meanwhile, can cut the gap between themselves and Eintracht Frankfurt to two points with a victory.

Striker Igor Matanović on facing Mainz

“If we are aggressive and energetic and make it an unpleasant game for them, then we can perform well and cause problems for any opponent."

Fischer on Freiburg's Euro exploits

"Unfortunately, I missed Freiburg's win, as we were playing at the same time as them. It's a great advert for the quality of the Bundesliga, though. However, we all need to remember it's just one leg so far."

Freiburg down Celta Vigo

Die Breisgauer were equally successful in their midweek endeavours, brushing Spanish outfit Celta Vigo aside in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final thanks to goals from Vincenzo Grifo, Jan-Niklas Beste, and Matthias Ginter. Mainz in red-hot form

The 05ers claimed a fifth consecutive win in all competitions after downing French outfit Strasbourg 2-0 at home in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League tie. Freiburg have scored nine goals following corners this season, more than any other Bundesliga side in 2025/26 apart from Borussia Dortmund.
camera-photo

The Fischer effect

Mainz have since taken 27 points from 15 Bundesliga games under Urs Fischer, losing just twice. Only Bayern, Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart have collected more in that period.
camera-photo

End of the line

Freiburg's 4-0 win over Mainz in the reverse fixture was their biggest of the season, as well as Mainz's heaviest defeat. Head coach Bo Henriksen lost his job just days later, with the 05ers bottom of the Bundesliga and winless since mid-September.
camera-photo

Curious stat

Among all clubs they've faced in the Bundesliga, Mainz have only recorded more wins in games with Hoffenheim and Augsburg (15 each) than against Freiburg (14). However, they haven't beaten the Breisgauer for five years (1-0 in Mainz in March 2021), with Freiburg winning three of the last nine in that period and the other six ending all square.
