More than just bragging rights up for grabs

Although tonight's game is a derby, a win would mean that little bit more, given the relegation threat that both sides face. A win for either side would plunge the other into deeper trouble. St. Pauli won the Matchday 2 fixture, but the Boys in Brown haven't won both derbies in a season since the 2019/20 campaign, when they beat Hamburg 2-0 in both matches.

St. Pauli's home struggles

In contrast to most newly promoted sides, where the home ground has to become a fortress, St. Pauli have struggled to put points on the board at the Millerntor since their promotion in 2024. Instead, Pauli have been reliant on their away form. Last season, they earned 18 away points and only 14 at home. This season, Pauli have the second-worst home record in the league with just seven points. That being said, tonight's hosts have only played seven home games so far this season due to their game against RB Leipzig being cancelled during Matchday 16.

Captain Yussuf Poulsen is out for this one, but Warmed Omari's participation has not been ruled out as he continues to get back to full strength following an ankle injury.

Danel Sinani was a doubt with a calf injury earlier in the week, but Blessin has confirmed that he is now back in contention to feature, as is captain Jackson Irvine. Connor Metcalfe, though, will not play as he continues to recover from a knee issue.

"We are aware that a derby week is a different kind of week, but we have to live that on the training pitch and be aggressive there, as well as being prepared for what’s coming on Friday. We saw that in training — it was very aggressive, very intense. And I think if you prepare like that, it’s easier to implement it in the match.”

“Derby matches are special, and of course they have a very high importance. That's why we want to win the match. We will not be gifted a derby win — that’s clear to us. For the three points, we have to invest everything. But the anticipation and simply the excitement for this match are definitely there.”

“I like these games. I always like the big stage. It’s just the energy you feel in the days and even weeks before the derby. It’s a big thing. "This is a must-win game. I think you don’t have to talk about the basics, about motivation for this game. It just comes naturally. So for us, we have to try to keep the defensive stability. I did that pretty well in the last games. We were a little bit unlucky also in some moments to concede some goals. We have to stay clear in our heads and play with our hearts. That’s the most important thing in these games.”

On the one hand, Hamburg have lost just two of their last six games and are up to 14th in the Bundesliga. On the other hand, they are the only side yet to win away from home in the German top flight this campaign, scoring just four times along the way.

Alexander Blessin's side have lost both of their two games in 2026, while they have won only one of their last 14 league games. However, those aforementioned pair of defeats this calendar year are their only two losses in their last five outings, which will give them hope as they look to extend their stay in the Bundesliga.
