A chance to underline the contrast

Last season, Leipzig failed to qualify for European football for the first time since their promotion in 2016. Victory at Pauli would see them have six points more than they did at the same point of last season, while it would also equal the five away victories they managed in the whole of 2024/25.

Adam Dźwigała picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Hamburg on Friday and is therefore unavailable here. After an injury lay-off, club captain Jackson Irvine came on versus HSV and could therefore return to the starting line-up.

Leipzig could jump back into the top four with a win here, as they sit just one point behind Stuttgart. They have one of the best backlines in the division with 24 goals conceded at this point, which compliments their wide variety of attacking options.

Mainz have jumped into the relegation play-off place ahead of Pauli, meaning Alexander Blessin's side need to start picking up wins soon. They've scored the fewest number of goals so far, however, hitting the back of the net just 16 times.

It was their first victory in four away matches, lifting them back above VfB Stuttgart and into the top four overnight on Saturday. They're now back a point behind Stuttgart.

Cause for optimism

Pauli enjoyed a strong second half of the season in 2024/25, picking up 18 points after the winter break, just three fewer than Leipzig.
