Full-time: Gladbach 4-0 Augsburg

Gladbach move five points clear of Augsburg after a dominant victory at home. Impressive displays from Tabaković - who grabbed a brace - as well as Honorat made the difference on the day for the clinical hosts. It's Die Fohlen's first home win in over two months, who return to winning ways after defeats to Wolfsburg and Dortmund. Augsburg, meanwhile, will now be looking over their shoulders, as they are just two points above the Bundesliga drop zone.

Essende hits the bar!

Almost from the striker. Essende receives the ball on the left and cuts inside. His curling shot just grazes the bar. It's as close as Augsburg have come today.
86'

Gregoritsch is on

Here comes the veteran forward. Can he score on his Bundesliga return? His last goal in Germany came away at Mainz back in March last year, while he was still playing for Freiburg.
camera-photo

Tabaković joint-second for Bundesliga goals

The forward is now on nine Bundesliga goals, the same number as Deniz Undav. The pair are second for goals in the league behind, you guessed it, Harry Kane.

Cool Hand Luca

Netz successfully escapes from 90% of his pressure situations. 90% of his passes under pressure get to a teammate.

Game settles into a familiar pattern

Augsburg are now taking control of the game, while Die Fohlen are waiting for counter-attacks.

Dahmen denies Tabaković a hat-trick!

The forward is clean through on goal, but Dahmen does very well to deny him with an outstretched hand. Tabaković then departs the pitch, to be replaced by Machino.
69'

Gladbach still dangerous on the counter

Every time Polanski's side venture forward, they look threatening. This could get even worse for the visitors, who have just brought on Jakić to try and sure things up a bit.
camera-photo

Both sides shake things up

Wonderkid Mohya is on for the hosts, while Baum has brought on Wolf and Gharbi. Still no sign of Gregoritsch, however.

Tabaković has another!

Honorat floats in a beautiful cross for Tebaković, but the 31-year-old still has an awful lot of work to do from the position he is in. Nevertheless, he expertly loops his header into the far corner of the net, and in doing so, kills any remaining Augsburg hope of mounting a comeback. A terrific team goal.

Free header for Zesiger!

The defender isn't picked up on a corner, but his glanced header is wayward and trickles wide. Augsburg have certainly had their chances this afternoon...

Massengo goes into the book

The midfielder prevents Reinz from launching a counter-attack and is booked for the professional foul.

Great reaction stop from Nicolas!

Essende has an immediate impact, getting on the end of a fine cross and forcing a reaction save from Nicolas. However, the referee penalises the DR Congo international for using his hand. Promising moments for the visitors.

Fellhauer tests Nicolas from range

Augsburg have gotten off to a strong start this half. A promising move sees the ball land at the feet of Fellhauer from 25 yards, but his rasping shot is well held by the Gladbach keeper.

Substitution for Augsburg

They have it all to do this half, and Baum has brought on striker Essende to try and turn the tide. We're back underway at Borussia Park.

Half-time: Gladbach 3-0 Augsburg

It's been a dream half of football for the hosts. The stats might paint a picture of a pretty even game, but Gladbach have been much more clinical, thanks to goals from Scally, Diks and Tabaković. Augsburg need some inspiration in the second period - will they turn to new signing Gregoritsch?

Three minutes of added-time...

Will we see another goal before half-time? It's been an almost perfect half for Gladbach.
41'

Gladbach push for a fourth

Reitz is growing into the game, causing some problems in the Augsburg backline with a searching cross. The Bavarians have settled back into a defensive shape, perhaps not wanting to concede another before the break.

Gladbach rank third in the Bundesliga for corners scored

They have scored again after a corner and are now the third most dangerous team at corners (54% better than the league average).

Tabaković makes it three!

Netz whips in a teasing corner, and it's the Gladbach striker who gets up ahead of Dahmen to head home. The Augsburg keeper feels he was fouled, but the goal stands after a VAR check. What a start to 2026 for Die Fohlen!

Augsburg push forward

Manuel Baum's side are now getting higher up the pitch. Pedersen, making his first Bundesliga start of the season, looks the livliest for the visitors so far down the left channel. He wins a free-kick, which Kade can't quite turn goal-wards.

Early lead for Gladbach!

The home side kick off the new year in the best way possible thanks to Scally. The full-back finds himself in the centre of the six-yard box, and good work from Netz sees the ball land perfectly at his feet. He duly drills the ball into the net to send the home fans wild.

We're underway!

The two sides get going for the first time in 2026. Gladbach are playing in their familiar white kit, while it's all red for visitors Augsburg.
Kick-off!

Gladbach target rare home win

The hosts haven't won at Borussia Park since they defeated Cologne 3-1 back in early November. They have also lost their last three matches against Augsburg - the most recent of which being a 3-0 defeat at home in February of last year.
camera-photo

Gregoritsch is back!

The Austrian international has returned to Augsburg on loan and will start from the bench today. Gregoritsch previously spent five years at the Bavarian club, where he scored 29 Bundesliga goals in 119 appearances. He'll be hoping to have a goalscoring impact if called upon this afternoon.

More on those teams

Gladbach's top assist provider, Honorat, who missed the last few games of 2025 due to injury, is fit again and returns to the starting lineup in place of Reyna. This is the only change for Die Fohlen from their last match before the winter break. Augsburg, meanwhile, are without the suspended Giannoulis and turn to Pedersen as his replacement, who is making his first league start of the season.

Eugen Polanski on facing Augsburg

"We want to deliver the kind of performances at home that we have on our travels recently. As such, we want to make one or two adjustments and have spoken to the lads about that already. I’ve told them what I thought of the 3-0 friendly defeat to Hannover in Turkey, but we’re not getting too bogged down by that. It wasn’t all bad, and things can change very quickly in the Bundesliga."
camera-photo

Manuel Baum on facing Gladbach

"We managed to switch off during the break, but we were all pleased to be back on 2 January. We're looking forward to our remaining 19 league games. We've been tweaking a few things here and there, but our full focus now is on Gladbach. We know we have another game in midweek, but our main priority has been the Gladbach game."
camera-photo

Early Gladbach team news

Eugen Polanski, meanwhile, will have to make do without Robin Hack and Nathan Ngoumou. Also, Tim Kleindienst is not yet fit enough to play, and this is expected to be the case for the remainder of January. Takai, though, could make his first appearance for the club.
camera-photo

Early Augsburg team news

Dimitrios Giannoulis and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, through suspension and a knee injury respectively, will play no part here, while Chrislain Matsima has also been ruled out with a thigh issue. Kristijan Jakić has recovered from a bout of flu but might not be risked here.
camera-photo

Two fresh faces

Augsburg, meanwhile, have made two transfers themselves. Michael Gregoritsch, who scored 31 goals in 129 appearances for the club between 2017 and 2022, returns on loan from Bröndby, while Yannik Keitel arrives from VfB Stuttgart, also until the end of the season.
camera-photo

Gladbach boost defensive options

Borussia have added centre-back Kota Takai from Tottenham Hotspur on loan during these early stages of the transfer window. The 21-year-old has not yet made an appearance for the English Premier League outfit, but has four caps for his country Japan.
camera-photo

Head-to-head

Augsburg have a strong recent record against Gladbach, having won each of the past three encounters between the two sides. The Foals' last win came in 2023, when Jonas Hofmann was on the scoresheet in a 2-0 triumph.

Watch: The stars’ winter break

This season’s winter break may have been slightly shorter than usual but the Bundesliga stars, as ever, made the most of their precious days off. Christmas and New Year were unsurprisingly the dominant themes of their social media posts, with crazy outfits aplenty on show in locations both sun-drenched and snow-covered, according to individual preference – while for some, the darts world championship in London was the only place to be. Come with us on an online winter tour.

Loan signing Kōta Takai made his debut for Gladbach, but their winter friendly did not go according to plan as they were well beaten by their Bundesliga 2 opponents. Unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet, the Foals created several good chances and hit the crossbar.

Clinical finishers

Despite their respective struggles this season, both of these teams have actually been pretty effective in front of goal. Gladbach have made 63 per cent of their big chances count - marginally more than Augsburg (60 per cent) - meaning they both sit behind only Bayern Munich and Mainz in terms of goal-scoring efficiency.

Watch: Gladbach 0-3 Augsburg - previous meeting

Gladbach have lost their last three league games against Augsburg, with their last win against them coming in the 2022/23 campaign. The Foals lost 3-0 at home in February 2025, with a Alexis Claude-Maurice hat-trick sealing the points for the visitors.

Gladbach resume their campaign two points better off than visiting Augsburg.
