Hamburg's DFB Cup blow

After a dramatic late win against Stuttgart, Hamburg were on the receiving end of a last-gasp defeat in the cup against Holstein Kiel on Wednesday. Kiel equalised right before the end of extra-time after Bakery Jatta had put the Red Shorts ahead, and then won 4-2 on penalties.

This will be the Bundesliga's first Nordderby in eight years and 109th overall. Despite their more recent ups and downs, both clubs were founding Bundesliga members in 1963 and boast seven Bundesliga titles between them (four for Werder, three for HSV).

Bremen and Hamburg last met in February 2022, with Marvin Ducksch's brace helping the Green-Whites avenge a 2-0 home loss earlier in the Bundesliga 2 campaign. Werder ultimately went up as runners-up, while HSV lost the promotion play-off to Hertha Berlin.

HSV stunned high-flying Stuttgart last time out, with Fábio Vieira scoring deep into added time after the Red Shorts had been reduced to 10 men. Their first win in five Bundesliga games, the result moved Merlin Polzin's men four points clear of the relegation zone.

Marco Friedl's first-half goal was cancelled out by a very late Saïd El Mala equaliser on Matchday 12. Werder have now lost just one of six home league games this season, compared to three defeats in six on the road. The Green-Whites return to action in the relative comforts of mid-table.
