Full-time: Freiburg 1-0 Heidenheim

It's back-to-back 1-0 wins for Julian Schuster's men as Grifo's first-half header proved the difference between these sides. Heidenheim grew in the second half, showing more attacking intent whilst Freiburg resorted to counterattacking. Both sides struck the woodwork once each as both goals seemingly lived charmed lives in the second half, but it's Freiburg who claim all three points.

Half-time: Freiburg 1-0 Heidenheim

Grifo's header is all that separates these sides at half-time in this Baden-Württemberg clash in the south-west. It was a tentative start as both sides sized each other up, but exploded into life after the Italian got on the end of a spectacular Dōan assist. Heidenheim instantly looked to respond, applying pressure to the hosts, who likewise tried to punish them on the counter-attack. However, it's just the one goal going into the break, with neither goalkeeper having had too much to do.

Arriving in the box, he plays a one-two before twisting and turning to hold the ball up, allowing for support to arrive. That support came in the form of Grifo, whose run from deep into the six-yard box is picked out by an excellent cross, allowing the unmarked Italian to head home from close range.

More on that Freiburg team

For Julian Schuster, there's just the one change to his side that got back to winning ways last time out against Bochum (1-0). Dōan comes in for Röhl, who takes his place on the bench. Marquee winter signing and former Heidenheim star Jan-Niklas Beste is on the bench.

More on that Heidenheim team

For Frank Schmidt's side, there are two changes to the team that lost 2-1 at home to Dortmund on Matchday 20. Scienza and Pieringer drop to the bench, replaced by Beck and Honsak. Additionally, he seems to have opted for a back-four instead of a back-five that was fielded last.

Frank Schmidt on facing Freiburg

"Freiburg have had some games against top teams where they conceded a lot of goals. That shows you can create chances against Freiburg. We need to play in a way where we don't just focus on defending. We need to create going forward, get shots away or set pieces. We need to go into the game with a lot of intensity."
camera-photo

Julian Schuster on facing Heidenheim

"They make it difficult for any opponent, with their physical presence and the intensity with which they play. They get up the pitch and they fight back. Some of the games [with Heidenheim] have been close and could have gone either way."

A score to be settled

Heidenheim snatched Freiburg's ticket into European competition last season, courtesy of a 1-1 draw in Freiburg on Matchday 33.
camera-photo

Heidenheim dealings

Frank Schmidt's side got their winter transfer business out of the way very early. They brought in Gerogian forward Budu Zivzivadze from Karlsruhe, who had been tearing up the Bundesliga 2. Additionally, Frans Krätzig was signed on loan from Bayern to provide more creativity out wide. Tireless midfielder Lennard Maloney was their most notable departure, swapping Heidenheim for Mainz.
camera-photo

Freiburg transfer business

Freiburg had one of the quietest windows of any in terms of quantity of transfers. However, with regards to quality, their only signing of former Heidenheim star Jan-Niklas Beste from Benfica could massively bolster their options out wide. Their only outgoings were Noah Weißhaupt to St. Pauli and Kenneth Schmidt to Hannover (both loans).

Enjoying life in the south-west

Heidenheim have never lost a Bundesliga away match in Baden-Württemberg (in 2023/24 they drew in Freiburg, Hoffenheim and Stuttgart).
