Half-time: Freiburg 1-1 Bayern

An entertaining first half draws to a close with the teams on level terms. Christian Günter broke the deadlock with a fantastic strike, but was arguably upstaged by Mathys Tel's wonderful effort from outside the area. All to play for after the interval.

Freiburg team news

Christian Streich, meanwhile, makes four changes to the team that lost to Augsburg last time out. Matthias Ginter and Manuel Gulde come into the heart of the defence, as does Kiliann Sildillia at right-back, while Michael Gregoritsch is replaced by Roland Sallai - Streich has changed his side's formation from a 4-2-2-2 to a 4-2-3-1.

Bayern team news

Thomas Tuchel continues to deal with a lengthy injury list, with him naming just seven substitutes. Leroy Sané is the latest big-name absentee, with Mathys Tel coming in to replace him as a result. Kim Minjae is the only other introduction to the team that defeated RB Leipzig, with Matthijs de Ligt's suspension keeping him out of the action. The good news, though, is that Alphonso Davies is back on the bench after a spell on the sidelines.

Freiburg starting XI

Atubolu - Sildillia, Ginter, Gulde, Günter (c) - Eggestein, Höfler - Dōan, Sallai, Grifo - Höler

Freiburg subs

Müller, Szalai, Makengo, Weißhaupt, Keitel, Muslija, Röhl, Philipp, Gregoritsch

Bayern starting XI

Neuer (c) - Kimmich, Dier, Kim, Guerreiro - Pavlović, Goretzka - Müller, Musiala, Tel - Kane

Bayern subs

Ulreich, Upamecano, Davies, Laimer, Zvonarek, Choupo-Moting, Zaragoza

Freiburg struggling

While they are into the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League, Freiburg are not having the best of times domestically - they have picked up only one out of a possible 15 points over the past five league games. If they are to qualify for Europe once more, they need to turn their fortunes around, starting here.

Up against it in the title race

Bayern are usually the ones being hunted - now, they are having to do the hunting themselves at the table's summit. After 23 matchdays, they find themselves eight points adrift of league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who are yet to lose a game in all competitions. Can they still win the Meisterschale, or will this campaign bring an end to their run of 11 successive titles? Tonight, like every other match before the end of the term, they cannot afford to drop points.

Watch: Max Eberl's top five signings

Max Eberl recently became Bayern's new sporting director - here, we take a look at the five best signings of his career.

Grifo is Freiburg's danger man

While Kane is Bayern's obvious attacking threat, Vincenzo Grifo is the man the Bavarians have to keep an eye. The Italian international was the Breisgau Brasilianer's top goalscorer in the Bundesliga last term with 15 strikes last term, just one fewer than Torjägerkönigen Christopher Nkunku and Niclas Füllkrug, while he leads the way this term for Freiburg too with seven.

Watch: King Kane keeping Bayern ticking

Lewandowski's season record isn't out of the question, though Freiburg are one of the three Bundesliga teams the 27-goal Kane has yet to score against as a Bayern player.

Streich's view on Bayern

"As ever we'll do everything to make life as hard as possible for them. You only do that with an exceedingly good performance. We have to stand up to them."
camera-photo

Tuchel's view on Freiburg

"They're very versatile and do a lot of running, they also use a lot of long balls with up to seven attacking players. It's always passionate in Freiburg, too. We'll need to find the answers."

Can Bayern banish away blues?

The champions are on a run of three successive away defeats in all competitions, although they will fancy their chances of correcting that against a Freiburg side with just one Bundesliga win so far in 2024.
