Full-time: Augsburg 2-1 Freiburg

The hosts end a run of four games without a win and in doing so, put daylight between themselves and the Bundesliga's bottom three teams. Vincenzo Grifo gave Freiburg the lead with a first-half penalty but second-half strikes from Felix Uduokhai and substitute Arne Engels bring the Bavarians a vital three points.

Hosts on terms

They've huffed and they've puffed and finally Augsburg have blown the Freiburg door down! Atubolu previously made saves to deny Iago and Demirović while the goalkeeper then made a tremendous stop to frustrate Tietz. Unfortunately for the goalkeeper, Uduokhai pounced on the latter parry to convert the loose ball and Augsburg are level.

Moves to be made

Both sides have an opportunity to seize today, with Augsburg starting the day six points clear of the bottom-three and with the chance to open up a healthy gap to the drop zone. A win could take them as high as 11th, while Freiburg know victory would see them close the weekend in seventh and within touching distance of a European place.

Jess Thorup on Freiburg

"Our respect for Freiburg is big, but we want to collect points once again. Freiburg are arriving here with confidence (after a dramatic midweek win in European competition). The fact that they played extra-time (against Lens on Thursday) is not an advantage for us. We will focus on our own performance."

Augsburg team news

Streich's Augsburg counterpart Jess Thorup also has some absences to deal with. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, Raphael Framberger, Reece Oxford and Mads Pedersen are all definitely ruled out, while Dion Beljo, Fredrik Jensen and Patric Pfeiffer may also be forced to watch on from the stands. Captain and top goalscorer Ermedin Demirović, though, will be available as he looks to add to the 12 league goals he has already bagged this term.
camera-photo

Freiburg team news

Streich will be without Matthias Ginter, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, Philipp Leinhart and Kenneth Schmidt in Augsburg, while Yannik Keitel's abdominal injury could keep him on the sidelines as well. Club captain Christian Günter, though, could be in line for his first start since the opening day of the season - he broke his arm for the second time in a matter of months and has therefore only played 117 Bundesliga minutes all campaign.

Freiburg's leaky defence

Christian Streich will no doubt be concerned by his side's backline, which has conceded goals at an alarming recently. They have shipped at least three in each of their last four matches, while only four teams in the division have had to pick the ball out of their own net more often than Freiburg's 40 times.

Head-to-head

Freiburg have enjoyed playing Augsburg over the past few seasons - they are unbeaten in the previous 10 match-ups and have prevailed in five on the spin. Die Fuggerstädter, meanwhile, have not triumphed since 2018, when they won 4-1.
