Philipp's return haunts Bremen

Freiburg start a Bundesliga season with two wins for only the second time in their history but Christian Streich's men left it very late to take the points against a valiant Werder side. Maximilian Philipp is back at the Europa-Park Stadion on loan and it was his thumping volley - from an inch-perfect Noah Weißhaupt assist - deep into injury time that keeps the men from the Black Forest perfect in 2023/24.

Freiburg team news

Freiburg were the only team in the top flight not to have any new signings in their starting XI last weekend. That will likely be the case against his week, but Streich will be forced into a change after captain Christian Günter suffered a recurrence of the arm fracture he picked up in pre-season. However, some good news is that Nicolas Höfler is available again after suspension and should take the place of Merlin Röhl in midfield.

Werder team news

Werder's Mitchell Weiser returned to first-team action against Bayern last weekend having shaken off a muscular injury but there was no place for new signing Naby Keita or Felix Agu for the River Islanders against the defending champions, with neither expected take part in competitive action until September.

Top scorers

Werder's Niclas Füllkrug finished joint-top scorer of the Bundesliga last season with 16 goals. Freiburg's Vincenzo Grifo was in third place, scoring 15 times in 2022/23.

An own goal from Attila Szalai and a Roland Sallai strike - both coming in the first half - ensured Freiburg opened with a win against Hoffenheim last weekend.

Goal in sight

Only once before have Freiburg started a campaign with two wins in their opening two games in 23 previous Bundesliga campaigns. Christian Streich's men will thus be looking to match their 2019/20 feat with Bremen in town.
