Freiburg up and running with win at TSG

Two late first-half goals were enough to give Freiburg all three points at Hoffenheim. Attila Szalai was the unfortunate man to register the division’s first own-goal of the season six minutes before the break, with Roland Sallai (pictured) then making it 2-0 in first half injury-time. Ozan Kabak's second-half effort proved only to be a consolation.

Intriuging affair

Hoffenheim have been linking up well as they seek to get back on level terms. Grifo could have restored Freiburg's two-goal lead around ten minutes into the second half though when he struck the post.

Hoffenheim hopeful for more

The hosts can count themselves somewhat unfortunate to be two down at the break. They matched Freiburg's ten shots but their lack of a goal threat proved the difference. Freiburg almost grabbed a third at the start of the second period with Kabak clearing from the line to deny Gregoritsch.

Probable line-ups

Who’s set to play this weekend? Who’s going to miss out on the Bundesliga’s return? Keep up to date with all the latest team news right here!

Freiburg ruthless

Christian Streich's side lost nine times in the Bundesliga last season, with each defeat coming against a side that ended up in the top eight of the final standings. From rung nine down, however, they showed no mercy and collected 48 of a possible 60 points from those 20 games (14 wins, six draws).

Bogey team

Hoffenheim boss Pellegrino Matarazzo has lost all six Bundesliga matches against Freiburg as coach so far: five with VfB Stuttgart and one with his current side.

Welcome back!

It's derby time in Sinsheim on Matchday 1 as Hoffenheim host Baden-Württemberg rivals Freiburg. Hoffenheim flirted with relegation last season, but found their stride following the appointment of Pellegrino Matarazzo to finish three points clear of the bottom three. Freiburg enjoyed another memorable campaign, falling agonisingly short of a maiden UEFA Champions League qualification. Can the two clubs kick on in 2023/24?
