After a minute’s silence for the people of Ukraine and another for youth player Jordi Bongard, who passed away this week, it took Gladbach less than 60 seconds to test Koen Casteels in the Wolfsburg goal, but Marcus Thuram’s effort was tame. The Wolves made no mistake with their first attempt, though, when Jonas Wind got on the end of Ridle Baku’s low cross into the six-yard box. A ball into the danger zone did the trick for Wolfsburg’s second, as well. Sebastiaan Bornauw got up above Matthias Ginter and Nico Elvedi a couple of yards out to head home Maximilian Philipp’s corner. But the Foals weren’t taking it lying down and got one back late in the half when Marcus Thuram leapt and nodded in a teasing cross from Alassane Plea. The gap really should have been two again by the break, but Philipp blazed over a volley from close range when picked out completely unmarked in the centre.

Knowing that Wolfsburg were going four points ahead of them, Gladbach came out desperate to turn things around. They looked lively, but chances were at a premium. Florian Neuhaus curled an effort well over and Ginter had a go from the edge of the area, but his attempt was weak. Things suddenly came back to life with 20 minutes to go when Maxence Lacroix was shown a straight red for a foul on Thuram as last man. He will have been grateful to his goalkeeper for keeping the Wolves ahead with a smart double save at a corner, before Plea put the third attempt over from close range. But there was nothing he could do as Plea again turned provider with an excellent clipped cross into the box, where substitute Embolo headed in at the far post. Ginter thought he had won it in added time, but the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up. Wolfsburg remain a point ahead of Gladbach down in 12th and 13th respectively.
