With no room for error in their pursuit of UEFA Champions League football, Dortmund survived an almighty scare inside 25 seconds. Emre Can's wayward pass on the edge of his own area was picked off by Marcus Ingvartsen, whose first-time strike cannoned back off the crossbar with Marwin Hitz beaten. Union threatened again moments later, but the rampaging Keita Endo shanked wide from inside the BVB box. That sparked the Black-Yellows into action as Reus scuffed wide from 10 yards out. Thorgan Hazard and Gio Reyna made Andreas Luthe work with shots from range, before Dortmund took the lead. Reus was adjudged to have been brought down by Luthe and, after Erling Haaland's penalty was saved, the Borussia skipper turned in his teammate's deflected follow-up from close range. Haaland had the chance to add a second before the half was out, but shot straight at the advancing Luthe's right leg when well placed inside the Union box.

Dortmund continued to knock at the door into the second half as Manuel Akanji went within a whisker of getting a touch on Reus's in-swinging free-kick. Reyna chipped wide from six yards, before having another close-range attempt cleared off the line following a lovely bit of play between substitute Jadon Sancho and Guerreiro. BVB were almost made to pay for their profligacy with little over 20 minutes remaining. Max Kruse whipped a free-kick around the wall from a good 20 yards, only for the fingertips of Hitz to to push the ball onto the woodwork. Haaland should have made the points safe, but failed to make the most of two very presentable openings. Fortunately for the usually ice-cold Norwegian, Guerreiro was able to seal the deal at the end of a blistering counter as Dortmund moved back to within four points of fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, with four games remaining.
