Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-2 Mainz
Goals: 0-1 Onisiwo (10'), 1-1 Stindl (26'), 1-2 Stöger (86')

It might have been Mainz in the bottom two coming into a tough away trip, but it was the nevertheless the visitors who made the perfect start. Adam Szalai stung the hands of Yann Sommer but one minute later, Onisiwo gave the Gladbach No.1 no chance. A ball over the Foals defence from Jeremiah St. Juste was not dealt with by Matthias Ginter, and the German forward volleyed a shot back across goal beyond Sommer's reach. The ZeroFivers almost handed Gladbach the perfect chance to get level another minute later as Robin Zentner brought Jonas Hofmann down having fumbled Alassane Plea's header, but a check from VAR saved the Mainz goalkeeper's blushes with an offside in the build-up. Mainz had the game's next best chance as a loose ball fell to Szalai on the edge of the Gladbach box, but he couldn't keep his strike on target. The away side were made to pay moments later as Stindl stroked home from 10 yards after a lay-off from Hofmann following fine work by Valentino Lazaro. Mainz weren't thrown off by the Gladbach equaliser with Szalai putting the ball past Sommer only to see it called back with the ball going out of play beforehand. Plea and Lazaro had the half's final chances with a shot into the side-netting and another blocked in front of goal.

Mainz came flying out the blocks at the start of the second half with Leandro Barreiro flicking a header just wide of goal from a set-piece. The Foals responded well once again, Stindl curling a free-kick just over the Mainz goal with both sides looking capable of finding the game's next goal. Marco Rose's side dominated possession but struggled to breach the Bundesliga's second-most porous defence. Bo Svensson, meanwhile, brought on two fresh strikers for the final 20 minutes with Robert Glatzel and Jonathan Burkardt looking to bring fresh ideas to lead a push for a winning goal at the other end. Just as the game looked to be heading for a draw, Mainz's hero against Bayer Leverkusen last weekend made his mark once again. Danny da Costa's cross was headed down by Stefan Lainer and Stöger mopped up the rebound with a ferocious hit across goal past Sommer. And that was enough to earn Mainz a massive three points to take them within one point of Arminia Bielefeld in the relegation play-off spot.
