Three big points

Schalke were beaten 2-1 in Wolfsburg on the opening weekend of the season, this time they've turned the tables and gotten 2019 off to a much better start. It wasn't always pretty, but those in Gelsenkirchen won't care at all about that as S04 climb up the table.

Wright!

American substitute Haji Wright has to chance to end this once and for all as he gets onto a ball across goal from the left, but the big man puts it wide unmarked!

Wide from Brooks

Wolfsburg are throwing caution to the wind now and centre-back John Brooks is up in the Schalke box. He gets a left boot to a cross from the left, which he claims took a deflection wide, but the USA international's protests are waved away.
83'

Haunting the Wolves

This is Caligiuri's third Bundelsiga brace of his career, but his first in Royal Blue. The previous two both came in Wolfsburg colours, most recently at Bremen in March 2015.

It was coming!

McKennie once again at the heart of things as he charges forward with the ball down the centre and slips in Caligiuri to his right. The former Wolfsburg man still has a lot to do but he cuts inside onto his left, leaving a defender in his wake, and fires the ball into the far corner for his second of the game. Can Schalke hold onto their lead this time?

Held by Casteels

Schöpf has a crack from some 20 yards, trying to go across goal from the right, but Casteels is down to hold to his right at the second attempt.
75'

Men down

The play has stopped for the moment after Renato Steffen and Steven Skrzbyski collided on the touchline, resulting in the Wolfsburg man requiring treatment.
67'

Yellow for McKennie

The American was a little too loose with his elbow as he went up for a header and has his name taken by referee Gräfe.
66'

Weghorst!

The Dutchman almost catches out the entire Veltins-Arena by dispossessing Salif Sane inside the Schalke box, turning to the left of goal and trying to curl the ball into the far corner. Nübel appears to get a slight finger to the ball, but it's a goal-kick to the hosts after that brief scare.
58'

Weston at work

The American has had a hand in five shots on goal and won 80 per cent of his challenges today - both the most of any Schalke player.
52'

McKennie!

Schalke have the bit between their teeth now and McKennie comes within inches of making it 2-1 with a low effort from the left side of the box, but he doesn't quite get enough curl on it and the ball skims just wide. The home fans seem to have found their voice again.
51'

Crossbar!

And the hosts almost strike again from the ensuing corner as Caligiuri flicks a header on at the near post, which lands on the top of the Wolfsburg crossbar but bounces away to safety.
50'

Uth!

Mark Uth, making his first appearance in over two months, almost restores Schalke's lead with a header at the far post from McKennie's chipped cross, but Casteels scrambles across his line to get a hand to the ball just inside his left-hand post.
49'

Over from Steffen

The Switzerland international has the first shot in anger of this half, but it's high and wide.

No changes

Finely poised

Things started so well for Schalke with Caligiuri converting an early penalty, but it was all Wolfsburg in the period following the goal, and the Wolves soon got their rewards when Rexbecaj tucked away a rebound. The visitors’ momentum faded later in the piece, though, as the Royal Blues appeared to find their feet and push forward themselves.
45'

Added time

Two additional minutes at the end of this first half.
42'

Ouch

Alessandro Schöpf accidentally catches Mehmedi on the back of his foot as they both go for the ball, and the Wolfsburg man really felt that one. He's down on the ground asking for treatment so Schalke sportingly put the ball out of play.
39'

Inches away!

Caligiuri whips in a free-kick from the right that the Wolfsburg defence all leave alone, but McKennie and Matija Nastasic are both alert at the far post trying to turn the ball past Casteels, but are just a split second too late to make it.
38'

Too loose

Schalke are looking to press Wolfsburg high up the pitch when they can, but whenever they do win the ball back the final pass seems to let them down.
30'

Caligiuri!

The former Wolfsburg man cuts inside onto his left foot and looks for the far corner, but cuts across the ball and instead slices it wide.
28'

Arnold lets fly

Maximilian Arnold loves a goal from range and this time lets fly from some 40 yards. The force of the shot almost forces Nübel back over his own goalline, but the 22-year-old keeps his balance and, more importantly, the ball in play.
27'

Almost the lead!

Nübel with another good stop to deny Yannick Gerhardt, who was through on goal after a defence-splitting pass.
20'

Elvis is in the building!

The Wolves were only behind for 12 minutes and it's thanks to Elvis Rexhbecaj's first goal of the season. Admir Mehmedi probably should've netted the equaliser first after he struck the post following a long diagonal ball, but Rexhbecaj was perfectly placed to blast home the rebound.

Wasted

But it's straight into the Schalke wall...
18'

Dangerous free-kick

William's cross from the right is headed clear by the Schalke defence, but only as far as Weston McKennie, who handles the ball trying to control it and Wolfsburg have a free-kick 20 yards from goal...
13'

Skrzybski wide

The summer signing from Union Berlin is given time and space to shoot around 20 yards out, but the forward drags his effort across goal off target.
8'

Cool Caligiuri

Daniel Caligiuri is the man with the responsibility for the home side and he makes no mistake, firing the ball high above Koen Casteels, who guessed right, and into the back of the net. The Schalke man's third of the season. He's also converted 11 of his 12 penalties in the Bundesliga.
7'

Penalty to Schalke!

William stands on Steven Skrzybski's foot and Manuel Gräfe points to the spot.
5'

Save!

A stop to calm any pre-match nerves Alexander Nübel may have had as he sticks out a strong left hand to deny an Admir Mehmedi header from a few yards out.

History beckoning?

All eyes were on 22-year-old Alexander Nübel as the teams came out at the Veltins-Arena. It's a massive game for both clubs to kick off 2019 and Nübel's job today will be to prevent a new Bundesliga record from being set. Never before have eight away teams won on a single Matchday. Weve had seven so far...
Kick-off!

Captain dropped

The big team news from this game is Schalke coach Domenico Tedesco's decision to drop captain and goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann in favour of Alexander Nübel. Twenty-two-year-old Nübel had deputised for the captain earlier this season when he was out with a groin injury, but he now looks to have ended Fährmann's five-year reign as Schalke No.1.
