Dramatic Bundesliga 2 season faces incredible battles for promotion and survival
The leading pack and bottom of the table in Bundesliga 2 can change at a heartbeat in a division that's impossible to predict, with the likes of Schalke targeting a return to the top flight while Nuremberg as high as ninth are among those in danger of being sucked into the relegation equation.
Looking for dramatic twists and turns this spring?
There is one league that rarely fails to disappoint when it comes to fate-defining battles at both ends of the table, and 2025/26 is no different for Bundesliga 2.
With two precious promotion spots the target that all eyes are set on (plus a two-legged play-off for third), and five teams separated by just two points at the top, something will clearly have to budge over a tense final 10 matchdays between now and the middle of May.
Watch: Edin Džeko scores on Schalke debut!

Schalke are top of the pack after Matchday 24 and making waves with the impact of big-name signings Edin Džeko and Loris Karius, while the steely defence built by boss Miron Muslić could prove the difference that takes them over the line in a packed promotion field.
Should they falter, the seven-time German champions and five-time DFB Cup winners could be overtaken by a whole bevvy of pursuers hot on their heels. Remarkably, there are four teams lurking within two points of the leaders.
A youthful Paderborn side are raring to seize their chance, Darmstadt are daring to dream with the attacking prowess of Isac Lidberg and Fraser Hornby, Elversberg are eager to take the next step after rising up the divisions to become regular promotion contenders, and Hannover have the best form in the division over the past six matches on their side.
There is no telling how that five-way promotion race will end, but thrills are guaranteed!
Watch: Soak in Schalke's pre-match atmosphere!

Incredibly, there is nothing novel about the situation for seasoned Bundesliga 2 followers. Last season alone saw Hamburg topping the table at this stage with Cologne - eventual division champions - seemingly someway further back in fifth but in fact just a single point behind the leaders.
This season, the battle to avoid the drop is every bit as tight, with just seven points between Nuremberg in ninth and local rivals Greuther Fürth at the bottom.
The former Bundesliga champions and four-time DFB Cup winners, coached by Germany and Bayern Munich legend Miroslav Klose, are therefore still not clear of the relegation scrap despite being in the table's top half!
Fans will remain glued to their seats between now and 17 May, but given the selection of historic clubs battling it out in Bundesliga 2, that is to be expected.
Schalke's average home attendance is above a massive 60,000 fans so far this season, while Hertha Berlin, Kaiserslautern, Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hannover all boast average home crowds above 40,000.
With stars, huge support and a plot line more unpredictable than any drama series, Bundesliga 2 is surely the best show on offer this spring.
