Bundesliga 2 reaches 20,000-game milestone
Bundesliga 2 reached the incredible milestone of 20,000 games played when Eintracht Braunschweig kicked off their second-tier encounter with Kaiserslautern on Saturday.
The landmark was reached when referee Richard Hempel blew his whistle to start the Matchday 30 encounter in Braunschweig.
Founded in 1974, 11 years after the Bundesliga, Bundesliga 2 was originally split into two divisions of 20 clubs, and last had that format after Germany had reunified in 1990. It was reduced to a single, 18-team league in 1994.
A total of 128 teams have taken part in the league's 51 seasons so far. Greuther Fürth lead the way with 33 Bundesliga 2 campaigns followed by St Pauli (31).
