Full-time: Karlsruhe 2-1 Arminia Bielefeld

For around two minutes, Broschinski thought he had given Karlsruhe an easy final ten minutes when he headed in from a Wanitzek corner to complete his brace. However, Arminia immediately pulled one back through substitute Mehlem, leading to a nervy final few minutes, but in the end, Karlsruhe held out for all three points.

83'

Conceding again

Karlsruhe have now gone ten consecutive seasons without keeping a clean sheet on the opening matchday. The last time they kept a clean sheet on the opening day of the season was in 2016. Funnily enough, that was against Bielefeld at the Alm in a 0-0 draw.

Bielefeld pull one back!

This time the visitors respond promptly! The fresh substitute Young cuts the ball from the left across the box towards the centre, where Mehlem is left unmarked and calmly slots the ball into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box. Bernat stretches himself full length, but can't get to it in time.

19'

First booking of the match

Schreck loses control of the ball in midfield, and Wanitzek nips in and has a lot of space ahead of him. Schreck then resorts to a tactical foul and pulls the Karlsruhe player down by his shirt. For this offence, the Bielefeld player receives a yellow card.
15'

Tight Angle

Broschinski plays in Jung, who has made a run to the right side of the penalty area, and the full-back immediately unleashes a powerful shot from just inside the box. His half-volley, however, is too imprecise and flies straight down the middle towards Kersken, who comfortably parries the shot.
15'

Quarter of an hour gone

Apart from Rochelt's strike in the seventh minute, there has not been much going on offensively from either side. Most of the action is taking place in midfield, between the two penalty areas.

Bielefeld team news:

Coach Oliver Kirch is also making his debut on the touchline in the second division today. The former professional can so far only point to experience in youth football and the Regionalliga West. Today he largely relies on players who were already on the pitch for Bielefeld last season. The only new face is right back Koudossou, who joined this summer from Nuremberg.

Karlsruhe team news:

Manager Maximilian Senft celebrates his second-division debut on the touchline today. The coach fields no fewer than three new signings as well as a debutant in his first match in the German second tier. Ofli (pictured) joined this summer from Bayern Munich, Eichinger was most recently under contract at SSV Jahn Regensburg, and Broschinski was most recently active in Switzerland for FC Basel. In addition, 19-year-old Zor starts in midfield. The youngster has come through the youth academy of the Baden club and makes his professional debut today.
