Schalke came out of the dressing room well in the second half and engaged the hosts in an end-to-end battle in the first 15 minutes of the second half, during which both teams squandered clear-cut chances. Nuremberg settled the game down after the hour mark and put the lid on it with Zoma's 3-0 a quarter of an hour before the final whistle. Schalke continued to have good chances but simply could not find the net. Nuremberg jump to eighth place with the win, while Schalke of course remain the runaway leaders at the top of the table.

Lubach's memorable debut

Schalke have won six of the seven second division encounters against Nuremberg. The latter's sole victory against the Royal Blues in Bundesliga 2 came at home back in August 2024, when Rafael Lubach (pictured) made his professional debut and scored 51 seconds after coming on as a substitute to make it 3-1. The debutant that day starts once again for the hosts this evening.

Kevin Müller is yet to taste defeat in a game he has played this season. In his three prior appearances this term - all between Matchdays 24 and 26 - Schalke claimed two wins and a draw.

Christian Mathenia makes his first appearance in nine months, having only played this season in the first-round exit in the DFB-Pokal against Illertissen. Top scorer Mohamed Ali Zoma (pictured) is also back in the starting line-up after missing the last two games through injury, replacing Adriano Grimaldi. Additionally, 18-year-old Kristian Mandic is included in a senior matchday squad for the very first time.

Baumann's Nuremberg past

Schalke sporting director Frank Baumann made the step up from the youth academy to the professionals at Nuremberg as a player, winning promotion to the Bundesliga with them in 1998 and being relegated again a year later.

A rare victory

In Nuremberg's sole second division win against Schalke (3-1 at home in August 2024), Rafael Lubach made his professional debut and scored 51 seconds after coming on as a substitute to seal the points. It was Nuremberg's first and only win in their last 12 competitive matches against Schalke (two draws, nine wins for the Royal Blues).

Schalke have the edge

The sides have faced each other 56 times in the Bundesliga, but on only seven occasions in Bundesliga 2. Schalke have won six of those second-division encounters.

Historic clash

Nuremberg (nine) and Schalke (seven) have won a combined 16 German championship titles, once dominating football in the country. Between 1934 and 1937, they contested the title amongst themselves on each occasion, with Schalke winning twice during that period. Both historic clubs are also connected by one of the oldest supporter friendships in the game.
