The last chance?
A long ball sails into the Schalke penalty area, but is cleared by the Royal Blues. However, the visitors remain in possession and get several more chances to cross into the box. Karius is there with a punch and then the offside flag goes up. Is that it?

What a tackle!
That should have been the certain 3-1 for Schalke, but Kleine-Bekel had other ideas. In front of the empty net, the Bochum player slides in on Sylla, who only needed to tap it in from 12 yards for the decisive goal, but fails due to Kleine-Bekel's challenge.

Almost the decider
Sylla and Karaman have the chance to make it 3-1 in the penalty area, but Horn is there and prevents the decisive goal.

Lasme the hero again?
The striker broke the deadlock for Schalke in the cup match against Lok Leipzig and was the reason why the Royal Blues advanced to the second round of the cup. Now, the striker's goal brings Schalke very close to their second home league victory of the season.

Over the advertising boards
El-Faouzi gives Passlack a little push at the touchline and the Bochum player promptly flies over the advertising boards at a moderate pace. Play continues without a card and without injury.

Debut in Royal Blue
Porath, who was only signed from Holstein Kiel during the week, makes his debut for Schalke. Gantenbein leaves the pitch, as do Schallenberg and Antwi-Adjei. Bachmann and Lasme are also newly involved alongside the new signing for the home side.

Three on the bounce
Holtmann has scored in each of his last three league matches; on Matchday 33 in the Bundesliga against Mainz, two weeks ago against Elversberg, and now also at Schalke.
65'
Holtmann breaks the deadlock!
The visitors take the lead here after a short period of prolonged pressure. It's Holtmann who gets the ball on the left side of the Schalke penalty area at the end of a Bochum attacking move, scoring with a low shot past Karius to give Bochum the lead.
64'
Goals guaranteed?
None of the past 21 Schalke home matches in the Veltins-Arena have ended goalless. The last 0-0 draw in Gelsenkirchen was back in March 2024 against Karlsruhe.
61'
Bero misses
The Bochum captain fails to connect with a header from a cross from the left side within the Schalke penalty area.
59'
Tactical foul
Hofmann prevents a counter-attack by grabbing El-Faouzi's shoulder in the Schalke half. That action earns him a yellow card.
58'
Corners in succession
The home side establish themselves up front and win two successive corners. Schalke have succeeded in shifting the game into Bochum's half, however; from Schalke's perspective, they've not managed to test Horn convincingly enough yet.
54'
Strong play from the hosts
Schalke come forward dangerously down the right side, as Gantenbein elegantly takes the ball past his opponent before playing a clever pass back to the penalty spot. Sylla had made a good run and connects with the ball but only manages a weak low effort that Horn can easily gather.
49'
Katić blocks
The Schalke centre-back is alert and blocks Holtmann's shot in the penalty area.
48'
Schallenberg misses
The Schalke player aims a bit too high from outside the box and blasts the ball over Horn's goal.

Schalke struggling to create chances
The home side are currently finding it enormously difficult in attack. Schalke haven't had a shot on goal since the 17th minute.
39'
High boot
Once again, it's chaos in Schalke's penalty area. Lenz catches El-Faouzi on the head with a very high foot as the latter tries to clear a high ball. The referee blows for a free-kick for Schalke.
38'
Katić escapes without punishment
The Schalke centre-back brings Bero down at the halfway line but doesn't receive a booking for his tactical foul.
36'
Early injury concerns for Bochum
In the cup, Sissoko had to come off injured early, and today, it's Strompf. Both are key players who will be missed enormously by Bochum so early in the season.
34'
Bochum forced to make a change
Strompf cannot continue after the collision with Sylla and has already taken his place on the bench. He is replaced by Pannewig.

Karius' favourite stadium?
Here in Gelsenkirchen, the Schalke goalkeeper has faced two penalties in his career - and saved both of them! The one today against Vogt joins the one form 10 years ago which he saved as a Mainz player against legendary Schalke forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Huntelaar himself is coincidentally in attendance today.
29'
Sylla loses out to Strompg
The Schalke forward is beaten in a foot race with Strompf as he chases a long ball before fouling the defender. Bochum are awarded a free-kick, but Strompf lands awkwardly and requires treatment.
27'
Penalty hero Karius
Karius has now saved two out of the three penalties he's faced in Bundesliga 2. His last save came back in March against Fürth's Srbeny.

Penalty for Bochum!
The referee is advised by the VAR to go to the monitor, and after reviewing the action, he awards a penalty for Bochum for a handball infringement from Kuruçay.

At the last moment
Kuruçay clears the ball from his own penalty area as Hofmann was gearing up to shoot. His hand seems to touche the ball in the process and there's a stoppage for a VAR check.

Another shot from distance
The home side are getting closer to the opening goal. This time, it's Timo Becker who is allowed to shoot from deep but his effort flies a couple yards wide of Horn's left post.
15'
In by Wätjen
The visitors come again down the left, where Wätjen crosses the ball into the middle. Katić is alert and clears with an outstretched leg to concede another corner, however Bochum won't be allowed to take it, as the whistle had gone for a foul on Antwi-Adjei.
13'
Bochum coming forward
The visitors combine skilfully in the hosts' half before a cross towards Hofmann is cleared for another corner. But again, Bochum don't capitalise on the set-piece and the chance goes begging.
11'
Young Lenz catching the eye
For the visitors, homegrown talent Lenz started as a defensive midfielder in place of the injured Sissoko. The 19-year-old has so far been very involved in the opening minutes and is constantly demanding the ball from Vogt and Co. during Bochum's build-up play from the back.
9'
Strange clearance
In a duel between Hofmann and Vitalie Becker, the ball is kicked high into the air and comes back down on the home team's goal. It's a corner, but nothing comes of it for Bochum.
8'
Horn seeing lots of early action
Sylla gets free in front of Horn and lets fly, forcing the Bochum keeper to make himself big to clear it away with a good save. It wouldn't have counted anyway though, as Sylla was offside in the build-up.
7'
Roof of the net
Schallenberg heads the following corner onto the roof of the net of the Bochum goal. It's been a good start from the home side so far.
5'
Well struck
Vitalie Becker unleashes a shot from around 30 yards, forcing Bochum keeper Horn to make a brilliant save, tipping the ball over the crossbar with one hand. The subsequent corner eventually finds its way back to Becker, whose effort is once again blocked behind for a corner.
4'
Good tackle
Strompf makes a sliding tackle against Antwi-Adjei on the left touchline before clearing the ball decisively out into touch.
2'
Chaos in the Schalke penalty area
Holtmann and Wittek combine on the right to break through the Schalke defence. The ball is then sent high into the penalty area, where Katić only manages to half-clear with a header. The home side are lucky that the subsequent rebound results in a goal-kick rather than a corner.

And we're off!
It's the visitors from Bochum who get the first half underway!
Kick-off!
Two ex-Dortmund players included
Bochum's Felix Passlack was a regular starter on the right last season in the Bundesliga, but has only had a brief appearance in the cup so far this season. Kjell Wätjen was brought on as a substitute in the first three competitive matches of 2025/26, but now gets to show what he can do from the start for the first time.

Derby atmosphere at Schalke!
More on that Bochum side
Having started in the DFB Cup with a 4-3-3 formation against BFC Dynamo (which Bochum won 3-1 after extra-time), Dieter Hecking has opted for a 3-5-2 as he did in the last league match against Elversberg. There's also plenty of fresh personnel, with four changes to the line-up which was fielded in the DFB Cup fixture.
Katić and Karaman return
Having missed their last league match in Kaiserslautern, Katić and Karaman make their return to Schalke's starting XI. Karaman wasn't fully fit at the time, whilst Katić served a yellow-red card suspension.
Schalke team news
Schalke make three changes to the side that ground out a hard-fought 1-0 victory in extra-time against Regionalliga outfit Lok Leipzig in the DFB cup last week. Karius returns in goal for Heekeren, Schallenberg is fit again and plays instead of Grüger, and on the right, Gantenbein starts as he did in the first two league matches. Antwi-Adjei is shifted further forward as a result.

Schalke boss Muslić on Bochum
"The Schalke fans have told me they're our local rivals. The [real] derby here is against a side who played in the DFB Cup on Monday evening, but I'm really looking forward to it. We know that this is a big, important game."
Bochum boss Hecking on Schalke
"Schalke want to make people forget about last season, which they managed to do in their opener against Hertha. They want to give their fans something to shout about. We need to be prepared for that and cause our opponents problems of their own."
From the Royal Blues to Bochum
Philipp Hofmann came through Schalke's academy, scoring the winning goal for Schalke's U19s in their 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 2012 championship final. However, he never made an appearance for Schalke's first team.
Hecking's Schalke past
Dieter Hecking has faced Schalke 30 times as a manager, but none of those clashes have taken place in Bundesliga 2. He's overseen 25 encounters in the Bundesliga, three in the DFB Cup and two in the UEFA Cup. His last match against the Royal Blues was a 2-0 victory with Borussia Mönchengladbach in Gelsenkirchen in February 2019.
Schalke's home form against Bochum
Schalke have won all of their last six home matches against the visitors. The last away victory for Bochum in Gelsenkirchen was 22 years ago, when they secured a 2-0 win the the 2002/03 Bundesliga season.
First time for everything
After 60 Bundesliga encounters, both teams meet for the first time in Bundesliga 2. Schalke have won four and drawn one of the last five competitive matches against Bochum, who's last three points against the Royal Blues came in a 2-1 home win in February 2009, when a certain Manuel Neuer was still in goal for Schalke!
