Full-time: Hertha Berlin 1-0 Greuther Fürth

Reese's early goal is enough for Hertha to secure a lacklustre 1-0 home victory against Fürth. The visitors were too passive for long stretches of the match. In the end, Hertha didn't really push for a second goal and can be pleased with three deserved points.

Reese misses too

At the other end, the same picture - the goalscorer has a free shot from ten metres out, but blasts the ball well over the crossbar.

Crunch time begins

Both managers bring on fresh players for the final minutes. Will we see another goal?
85'

Fürth get lucky!

Reese reaches the right half-space in front of the penalty area and shoots on the turn. A big deflection from Dietz increases the danger, but the ball ends up going a few centimetres to the right of the frame.
84'

Too harmless

After a lengthy passing sequence, Massimo tries somewhat hastily with a kind of chip shot from a good 20 metres out, but the ball lands on the roof of the net.
79'

Defensive substitution

Leitl apparently wants to protect the narrow lead and brings on Karbownik in place of youngster Maza.
75'

Cuisance challenged today

The creative midfielder has had to deal with 22 pressure situations today - and his success rate in these situations has been solid.

Almost 2-0!

Danger once again: Scherhant is sent racing down the left wing. He penetrates the penalty area and tries a low shot towards the far corner. The ball fizzes past the right post and out for a goal kick.
71'

First yellow, then the substitution

Loosli catches Maza on the ankle and sees yellow. Shortly after, he goes off and is replaced by Futkeu. Massimo is also now part of the action. These are two attacking substitutions for the Cloverleaves.
69'

Scant scoring opportunities

It speaks to the defensive behaviour of both teams, as there have been virtually no shots on goal in the last few minutes. The match is not particularly attractive in this phase.
65'

More possession now

In the last few minutes, the visitors have been playing better - but they still lack penetration in the final third.
63'

More pace now

In Scherhant, we now have a really pacy dribbler on the pitch.

Reese brimming with confidence

Can the striker make the difference for Berlin once again?
58'

Injury break

Zeefuik and Meyerhöfer clash heads and require treatment.
56'

Good corner!

Cuisance whips in a heavily curling corner from the right and it goes close to the goal, but Noll is at his near post and duly punches the ball away.
52'

Frustrating for Leistner

After an unnecessary foul in midfield, the centre-back receives his fifth yellow card and will miss next week's match.
51'

Green from distance

Fürth manage to get forward and Green takes a shot from almost 30 metres out, but misses completely. The ball goes towards the corner flag and rolls out of play.
49'

Slow pace

Both teams are taking it easy after the restart.
46'

We're back under way!

The teams return to the pitch unchanged. Fürth kick off.

Half-time: Hertha Berlin 1-0 Greuther Fürth

Berlin lead at the break - absolutely deservedly through Reese's goal - and could have certainly extended their lead already. Fürth were clearly too passive in the first 45 minutes. But because it's only 1-0, the match is still completely open.

45'

Reese offside

The goalscorer breaks through again on the right side and lays it back to Zeefuik, who even converts the ball. However, Reese was clearly offside in the build-up.
44'

Lacking ideas

In the final third, Fürth remain alarmingly ineffective - they completely lacking goal threat.
42'

What else before the break?

Hertha are trying to increase their lead, but they lack the final punch in front of the opposition goal.
38'

The first yellow card

Dárdai goes into the tackle with his studs showing and receives a yellow card for it.
37'

Niederlechner goes close!

Maza sends a great through-ball into the penalty area and the striker then tries to poke the ball past Noll, but narrowly misses the ball.

How will Fürth respond?

So far, there has been no reaction to conceding the goal. The visitors are not really pushing forward with urgency, but they are also busy with defensive work.
25'

Almost 2-0!

But the flag is up! Niederlechner lays off a cross from the right side to Maza, who can finish freely from five metres out. Noll makes a strong save!
23'

Hertha stays in it

The home side continue to push forward and are going for the second goal. A long-range shot from Maza fails to hit the target and goes well wide.

New Hertha record for Reese

The striker scored his tenth goal of the season; with only 16 appearances in 2024/25, he has already scored more often than in the entire previous season (nine goals in 31 matches). Reese has only scored more goals in the Bundesliga 2 in 2022/23 for Holstein Kiel (eleven goals).
16'

Reese again!

Niederlechner uses his body against Loosli and wins the ball high up the pitch. Reese reacts quickly, takes possession, drives into the penalty area from the right side and finishes coolly into the far corner!

10'

That was close

Reese breaks through on the right wing and plays the ball low into the middle, Cuisance tries to get a toe to it, but misses the ball by a few centimetres.
8'

Good start

The Berliners are making the better impression in these opening minutes and are combining well around the Fürth penalty area. The visitors are sitting quite deep.
5'

Well over

Fürth make their presence felt in attack, but Hrgota's long-range effort sails several metres over the crossbar.
3'

Corner variation

Reese delivers the first corner from the left side to Demme at the edge of the box, who attempts a volley. He doesn't connect with the ball properly, however..

Berlin with two changes

Hertha manager Stefan Leitl makes two changes to his starting line-up compared to the last match (1-1 home draw against Magdeburg): Zeefuik and Niederlechner come in for Winkler (not in the squad due to an adductor injury) and Scherhant (on the bench).

Three changes for the Cloverleaves

Fürth coach Jan Siewert makes three changes to his starting eleven compared to the last match (0-1 home defeat against Ulm): Dietz, Klaus and Srbeny play for Asta (not in the squad), Futkeu and Consbruch (both on the bench).

Hertha Berlin's starting lineup

Ernst - Gechter, Leistner (c), Dardai - Kenny, Cuisance, Demme, Maza, Zeefuik - Reese, Niederlechner

This is how Greuther Fürth line up

Noll - Loosli, Quarshie, Gieselmann - Meyerhöfer, Dietz, Green, John - Hrgota (c), Klaus - Srbeny

Jan Siewert's thoughts on facing Hertha

"For us, it's about the lads on the pitch being able to handle pressure and still play football with a certain lightness. We have to keep that in mind in situations like these. For us, it's also about the fact that we have proven we can deliver good away performances. I believe in the lads and I am convinced that we will manage beat the drop."

Stefan Leitl's thoughts on facing Fürth

"I expect a highly motivated and well-prepared team with a lot of quality that will demand everything from us. We want to channel our energy and maintain our flow to win and further improve our home record."

Hertha's top star in focus

In Fürth, Leitl also had Fabian Reese under his wing for a few months (44 Bundesliga 2 matches for Fürth, three goals), deploying the pacey winger more frequently as a centre-forward. Reese has won four times in nine Bundesliga 2 matches against Fürth, but has never scored.

Leitl knows the Cloverleaves

Stefan Leitl was the manager at Fürth from February 2019 until summer 2022, gaining promotion to the Bundesliga with the Cloverleaves in 2021 and being relegated straight back down. Against his former club, he has collected 20 points in nine matches (six wins, two draws, only one defeat).

Duel with great history

Fürth celebrated its most important victories against Hertha in 1926 and 1929, when the Cloverleaves prevailed in the German Championship finals and thus claimed the last two of their three league titles.

Perfect home record

Last season, Hertha won both matches against the Cloverleaves, including a 5-0 thrashing at home. At home, the Berliners have never lost against Fürth (five wins, one draw).

Spectacular first leg

In the first half of the season, Noel Futkeu turned around the early deficit created by Ibrahim Maza with his only brace in the Bundesliga 2, and in the final phase Fürth secured the 2-1 victory with ten men (second yellow card for Maximilian Dietz in the 77th minute).
