Goooal! The decisive moment!

Regensburg counter-attack their way to victory. Galjen receives the ball after winning possession in the centre circle and sprints down the left. One-on-one with Heekeren, he keeps his cool and slots the ball through the keeper's legs and into the bottom corner.

Too weak even from set pieces

Schalke earn themselves another corner. But today the set pieces aren't as dangerous as they were against Ulm.
88'

Time-wasting

Pollersbeck takes too much time with the subsequent goal-kick.
87'

Still not enough pressure

Schalke are simply too sloppy. Hamache sends Murkin through on the left, but he overcooks the pass and the ball goes out of play.
86'

Injury-related substitution

Kühlwetter is receiving treatment and has to come off. Meanwhile, Schalke are preparing for a corner.
84'

Murkin on

Last substitution for Schalke.
83'

Toure!

The debutant takes a first-time shot from the edge of the penalty area but the bouncing effort fizzes just wide of goal. Pollersbeck would have had it covered though.

Final phase begins: Big points for Jahn?

Time is running out for Schalke and, apart from two very good chances from set pieces, not much has come of their offensive efforts. Regensburg could move within six points of the relegation play-off spot with a win. That is, if the concurrently played match in Münster remains at 1-1.
79'

Triple substitution

Jahn bring on three fresh players. Can the home side see out this important victory?
78'

Substitution

77'

Passionately defended

Some more strong defending from from Wurm. Ba penetrates into the penalty area, but in the one-on-one situation, the Regensburg defender produces a clean tackle and comes out on top.
77'

Pollersbeck in pain

Brief interruption: Pollersbeck is receiving treatment, but should be able to continue.
75'

Another Schalke player down

After a free-kick, Schallenberg gets to the ball in the middle and takes a shot but then falls after contact from Ganaus. That didn't look like enough for a penalty.
74'

Hamache builds up steam

The speedy winger immediately causes danger. He dribbles along the byline and his cross is sharp, but Jahn manage to clear it.
73'

Double substitution for Schalke - Hamache makes comeback

Barkok comes off shortly after being cautioned. Schalke are now going more offensive with Ba, as a second striker, and a fit-againHamache taking the field.
70'

Mohr!

Similar situation to the only goal so far, but this time it's a Schalke corner that flies through the penalty area. Mohr takes a first-time shot from 20 metres out and it looks dangerous, but Pollersbeck and his defenders pull together and avert diasaster.
68'

Well played through

Good combination from Schalke. Seguin goes down on the right at the byline, but no penalty is given. Instead, a corner.
67'

New right flank

Aydin and Bulut make way. New man Toure celebrates his first appearance in Bundesliga 2.
66'

The first substitute comes on

First change of the match. Galjen comes on for Adamyan. Mohr is getting ready for Schalke.
63'

Much effort - little reward

Plenty of possession for S04, even up to 70 percent in the second half. But there's still too little coming of it.

Ganaus with plenty of space

There was more in it for the home side. Ganaus lurks on the right wing and gets the ball served to him, but he can't control it.
61'

Still a lot of piecemeal play

Aydin tries again from distance. The deflected shot goes out for a goal kick. The resulting corner comes to nothing.
59'

Jahn standing firm

The visitors establish themselves in the attacking third. But continued sloppiness allows Regensburg to shut the situation down. Younes and Barkos are repeatedly failing in their attempts to play quickly and directly forward.
56'

Schalke now showing more effort

Schalke hit on the counter, with Aydin picking out to Sylla, but the striker is pulled back for offside.
54'

Karaman!

Best chance for Schalke! After Seguin's corner, Karaman gets a fairly unchallenged header from about ten metres out, but puts the ball clearly over the bar.
54'

Wurm slightly faster

Wurm Sylla in a foot race and then clears -somewhat unconventionally - with a lob to the corner.

Schalke captain struggling

Hardly any space for Karaman and Co.
51'

This could work

A quick attack from the visitors. Seguin and Aymen Barkok bring Donkor into play. He breaks into the penalty area, but overcooks his touch and Pollersbeck is there to swoop.
48'

Fierce battle for space

There are a lot of midfield duels at the beginning of this second half. Regensburg definitely don't want to be pushed back into their own half.
46'

Glimmer of hope: Last four goals in the second half

The visitors have been significantly stronger in the second 45 minutes in recent matches, scoring twice after the break both in Fürth and at home against Ulm. Can they do it again today?
46'

We're back!

Schalke return from the dressing room without any substitutions, somewhat surprisingly. Will we see a different approach from the visitors?

Half-time: Regensburg 1-0 Schalke

After one minute of stoppage time, the players head to the dressing rooms. Regensburg go into the break with a deserved lead, having earned their advantage through a courageous performance and superior determination. Schalke cannot cope with the home side's style of play at all and have proven far too harmless, offering little quality so far.

A shot at last: Aydin from distance

Shortly before the break, Schalke finally manage their first shot on goal. Aydin cuts in from the right, but his long-range effort lands in the arms of Pollersbeck.
43'

Telling corner

Donkor - still the best Schalke player - wins a corner. Seguin's delivery goes directly to Pollersbeck.
40'

Sylla narrowly misses the ball

Donkor breaks through on the left. The subsequent cross is a bit too high for the well-positioned Sylla to reach it.
39'

Far too harmless

Just minutes before half-time, the visitors still haven't registered a shot on goal.

Yellow card again

Third yellow card within minutes. Aydin goes in a bit too aggressively in midfield.
32'

Not very sportsmanlike

Bulut prevents a quick throw-in from Hein - for which he rightly receives a booking.
31'

With a bit of pace

Donkor sends Sylla through - offside. But with quick and long balls, Schalke have so far created at least a hint of danger. A tactic for the next 60 minutes?

Lack of focus

Typical: Younes squanders the ball on the right byline, so Jahn have no trouble clearing the situation.
26'

Regensburg deserved leaders

So far, the visitors are putting in a really poor performance. Regensburg are frustrating Schalke, applying a lot of pressure on the ball and finding a lot of success. The hosts have thus far taken the wind out of the visitors' sails.
24'

Midfielder intervenes

Seguin tackles Ganaus too hard, earning himself a yellow card.
23'

Almost 2-0!

Huge chance for the 2-0. Heekeren plays a sloppy pass directly to Handwerker. The left-back shoots first-time from near the touchline but it fizzes just wide.
21'

Goooal! Kühlwetter secures the lead!

And it's not undeserved. The home side strike from a corner. Handwerker delivers the ball and Heekeren gets a touch but can't hold onto it. Kühlwetter is lurking at the left edge of the penalty area. He calmly controls the ball and tucks it at the near post.

Hosts more alert

Regensburg has everything under control defensively. Sylla and Co. have barely been involved so far.
17'

Hosts improving

This is a good spell from the hosts here. They are consistently challenging Schalke in midfield, then quickly moving forward. A low cross from Handwerker whizzes past friend and foe alike.
15'

Good idea from Jahn

Danger in front of the Schalke goal again. Kühlwetter plays Hein through, but Heekeren is alert and gets to the ball a step ahead of the attacker.
12'

Promising approaches on both sides

The opening minutes are over. Regensburg are pressing Schalke well, but so far the visitors have been able to create danger when they move quickly down the right side. The hosts, on the other hand, also prefer the right, finding space repeatedly around Aydin and Bulut. However, both teams are lacking precision with the final pass.
10'

Again down the right

Schalke again have plenty of space on the right. Bulut sends Sylla into the penalty area, but Jahn clears at the expense of the first corner of the match. Schalke are becoming a bit more assertive now.
8'

Bulut giving his all

Donkor's diagonal ball opens up the field for Bulut. The fit-again forward wants to set up Aydin in the middle, but once again the pass goes astray and possession is lost.
6'

Regensburg more secure in possession

The hosts are moving the ball much better so far; Schakle are still making a lot of passing errors in their build-up play.
4'

Karaman in the centre

Schalke are playing with a back four with Karaman in the centre. The captain dribbles near the halfway line, but can't find a teammate.
2'

Ballas challenges Heekeren

And the first shot on goal comes from the set piece. Ballas heads the ball goalward but Heekeren, drops smartly and makes a comfortable save.
1'

Committed Jahn

The hosts begin bravely and attack down the right. Ganaus misses the cross in the middle, but Regensburg stay on it and are awarded a free-kick from the right-hand channel.
1'

Kick-off!

Regensburg get the match under way.
Kick-off!

Schalke with a back three after all?

Based on the selected personnel, a 3-4-3 formation would also be possible for the visitors. Aydin and Donkor could occupy the wings in front of Bulut, Schallenberg and Kaminski, while further forward Karaman would operate in the inside-right position rather than as a number ten, with Younes in the inside-left position behind striker Sylla. The first few minutes will reveal the setup.

Young defender handed debut start

A fresh face is set to feature in defence for the home side today. Just 17, Ben Kieffer is starting his first Bundesliga 2 match today. Last year, he made his debut as a 16-year-old, coming off the bench on Matchday 17 to become the youngest player to feature in the entire season.

Two changes for Schalke

For the visitors, Bulut returns to the starting line-up after missing the last four matches due to injury. Aydin also returns. The duo are replacing Kalas (bench) and Gantenbein (suspended after yellow-red card).

Six changes for Jahn

For the home side, coach Patz has opted for plenty of rotation. After the 6-0 defeat in Elversberg, he makes six changes, the most in over three years (November 2021). Kieffer, Ballas, Ganaus, Viet, Kühlwetter and Hein all come into the starting line-up.

Schalke's Starting XI

Heekeren – Bulut, Kaminski, Schallenberg, Donkor – Seguin, Barkok – Aydin, Karaman, Younes – Sylla

Regensburg's Starting XI

Pollersbeck - Kieffer, Ziegele, Hein - Wurm, Ballas, Handwerker - Viet, Kühlwetter - Ganaus, Adamyan

Patz's thoughts on facing Schalke

"The defeat at Schalke in the reverse fixture was in no way acceptable, with the manner in which we performed there. We analysed it very clearly and carried that into the training week. You could tell that the lads don't want to leave it like that."

van Wonderen's thoughts on facing Regensburg

"It's the first opportunity to reach the 40-point mark. That's why we're travelling to Regensburg. They have a good home record, having secured two wins and two draws from their last four home matches. We know what to expect."

Seguin's favourite opponent

Paul Seguin has played against Regensburg seven times in the Bundesliga 2 and has won all seven matches (one each with Schalke and Dresden, five with Fürth).

Historic encounter

Schalke visited Regensburg in the DFB Cup way back in August 1954. The match ended 1-1 and a replay in Gelsenkirchen was required to settle the tie. Schalke won that 6-4 after trailing 3-4 at one stage.

Previous encounter

In the first clash between these clubs this season, Schalke celebrated their first victory under Kees van Wonderen (at the fifth attempt), with goals from Moussa Sylla and Kenan Karaman, who has scored in each of his three second-division matches against Regensburg.
