Full time: Schalke 2-1 Ulm

A victory in the category of 'workmanlike win'. Schalke struggled for a long time, looking toothless. But through an improved performance in the second half, they turned the match around. Even with a man advantage, Ulm failed to create any clear-cut chances in the closing minutes.

Ulm pushing again

Ulm are pinning Schalke back in their own half, trying to deliver crosses into the penalty area. However, they're not creating any clear-cut chances from these attempts.

Short working day

Ba, who was recently substituted on, has to leave the pitch already. Having been on a yellow card, he makes way for the young centre-back Talabidi, who is supposed to defend the lead.

Another dangerous attempt from distance

Strompf takes heart and shoots from distance. Schalke's keeper Heekeren spills the seemingly harmless shot towards the right corner, allowing it to bounce forward. The hosts clear the ball in the penalty area with great difficulty.

Surely the winner for Schalke!

What a rollercoaster of emotions! Schalke are down to ten men, then they have a corner from the left. Kamiński rises highest at the six-yard box and heads the ball into the bottom right corner.

The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The Royal Blues had their opportunities going forward. However, the few chances, like Karaman's recent header, could not be converted.

Schalke with a sign of life

Murkin powers through on the left wing and crosses to the unmarked Karaman. His header lands just wide of the goal. Had he directed it better, it would have been dangerous. But he didn't.
80'

Good free-kick position for Ulm

Brandt holds the ball well on the right wing and is brought down by Schallenberg. The set piece from the half-space is a task for Krattenmacher. The free-kick flies to the far post, where Brandt rises high. But his header lands wide of the goal.

Few highlights from Schalke

It's hard to make sense of Schalke. After the equaliser, they were on the front foot. But for a little more than ten minutes now, they've lacked the cutting edge going forward. Even the substitutions of Mohr and John Murkin haven't been able to change that.

There's Krattenmacher

Even though it doesn't result in a goal-scoring opportunity, the recently substituted young star causes a commotion. He controls a long ball on the left impressively, drives into the penalty area and can only be stopped by the combined efforts of Kalas & Co.

Ulm make a double substitution

Although Röser and Batista Meier have had a good game, Lechleiter takes them off. With Krattenmacher and Telalović, fresh legs are brought on for the counter-attacking play.

S04 more aggressive

The Royal Blues seem to have used the half-time break to their advantage. They are now winning the ball back much quicker when they lose it. They need almost four seconds less to do so compared to their opponents.

Schalke keep the pressure on!

Almost 2-1 to the Royal Blues. Younes plays a delightful through ball from deep on the left to Karaman. The Schalke captain runs in behind the Ulm defence from the right and finds himself one-on-one with Thiede. The ball ends up in the net, but Karaman was marginally offside.

Schalke find the leveller!

Equaliser for S04! Seguin drives the ball forward, plays it to Younes, who is waiting in a pocket of space on the left. His pass finds Karaman in the penalty area, who shields the ball skilfully. Seguin has followed up in the meantime, picks up the ball and shoots into the right-hand corner. Brilliant combination from the three!

First half-chance for Ulm

As is often the case, Batista Meier is the driving force for the Sparrows. Left-back Strompf plays the ball forward along the line. The Ulm attacker moves into the penalty area, but his cross ends up in the arms of Heekeren.

Hardly a way past Dressel

The central midfielder of Ulm is very present so far. He's repeatedly intercepting the ball in front of the defensive line and initiating counter-attacks. No wonder he has won the most duels of all players on the pitch.

Ulm defending compactly

The home side seem to have set themselves up for a lot in the second half. They are now pressing high and trying to get Sylla and Younes into the game. The newly promoted side are doing well, however, with their defenders providing cover as a unit. Consequently, no chances yet for the Royal Blues.

Half-time: Schalke 0-1 Ulm

The first 45 minutes were not exactly a great advertisement for football. Both teams began with ambition and even had good chances. After a strong ten minutes from Schalke, the match became flat. Ulm's lead hadn't been on the cards before they scored. However, it's not undeserved either.

Bewilderment at Schalke

Fighting back after going behind? Not a chance. Even after conceding, Schalke are struggling for ideas. Time and again there are misplaced passes or long balls from Schallenberg and Kalas that lead to nothing.
43'

The Sparrows keep their foot on the gas

Another long ball from the visitors and again it becomes dangerous. Kalas can only clear the ball for a corner. This doesn't yield anything, but it illustrates the confidence that the visitors have had since taking the lead.

Ulm take the lead!

There we go, it works! Brandt shifts the play wonderfully from the right to the left side. There, Batista Meier takes the ball inside. His control is a bit off, but the ball falls to Higl's left boot. The Ulm player finishes directly into the bottom left corner.

Telling scenes at Schalke

Ulm actually have a good counter-attacking opportunity, running with four forwards against three Schalke defenders. The ball is initially played sloppily out to the right to Röser and the momentum fizzles out. In an attempt to pick up the pace again, there's a misunderstanding with his teammate and he plays the ball into touch.
34'

The visitors try from distance again

Ulm combine down the left flank to advance towards the Schalke goal. Keller cuts inside, plays to Röser, who lays it off for the left winger at the edge of the penalty area. But the shot lacks power again. Heekeren collects the ball comfortably.
32'

Ulm's defence stands firm

The visitors haven't allowed many chances so far. On one hand, this is due to the concentrated defensive performance led by captain Reichert. But on the other hand, Schalke are hardly challenging him and his colleagues. The hosts are now lacking pace.

Schalke not yet compelling enough

Even though the Royal Blues are looking for the finish more often, Ulm's keeper Thiede hasn't had to save any of them yet. In contrast, the Sparrows have managed to create more danger from their few attempts.

And Ulm again!

Allgeier breaks through on the right flank and plays a lovely ball into the space behind. Röser gets a shot away from the edge of the penalty area, but it lacks the pace to seriously trouble Heekeren.
23'

Wing play proving fruitful

The Schalke side haven't been truly threatening yet, if we exclude the brief spell of pressure. Most often it's the long balls to the wings and behind Ulm's full-backs that create danger.
20'

How will Ulm respond?

The Sparrows must first recover from this brief period of pressure from Schalke. They lack the confidence and forward momentum they had in the opening minutes of the match. They're also not pressing as high as they were before.
17'

Sylla! Only inches away!

Younes sends Donkor down the left flank. His cross flies through the visitors' six-yard box. Sylla misses the ball by a whisker. Schalke are closer to taking the lead at the moment.
15'

Next corner for the Knappen

The hosts arrive somewhat dangerously in front of the Ulm goal again. Barkok is sent to the byline on the right wing, but the Schalke player is just about stopped. The corner from Seguin from the right doesn't produce anything dangerous.
13'

First chance for Schalke

Sylla is sent through with a long ball behind the defensive line. From the left, the Frenchman cuts inside into the penalty area and takes a shot. His effort is blocked, though.
10'

First minor interruption

Quite a lot going on in the opening phase: Ulm are ambitious, pressing aggressively. Now Dressel draws a foul in midfield and thus takes the foot off the gas a little.
6'

Heekeren uncertain!

Ulm's Keller shoots from the left side outside the penalty area for what should be a seemingly straightforward save for the goalkeeper. However, Schalke's keeper spills the ball forward. The visitors nearly scored the opener on the rebound. But the follow-up attempt was ruled offside.
5'

Schalke vying for control

The hosts are still not finding calm in their own game. Schalke have no answer to Ulm's high pressing except for long balls that end up with the opposition.
3'

Brave start from the visitors

The Sparrows don't want to hide at all. In the opening minutes, they have possession of the ball and they're wanting to make Schalke chase the game.

Ulm team news

Spatzen coach Robert Lechleiter sends the same starting eleven onto the pitch that began in the 2-1 home victory over Darmstadt on the last matchday.

Schalke team news

S04 manager Kees van Wonderen makes seven changes to his side that drew 0-0 in Fürth last time out. Heekeren, Donkor, Kalas, Kamiński, Barkok, Sylla and Younes all come in for Karius, Antwi-Adjei, Aydin, Bachmann (all not selected), Murkin, Sánchez and Ba (all benched).

Ulm starting XI

Thiede - Allgeier, Gaal, Reichert, Strompf, Keller - Brandt, Batista Meier, Dressel - Röser, Higl

Schalke starting XI

Heekeren - Gantenbein, Kalas, Kamiński, Donkor - Younes, Schallenberg, Barkok, Seguin, Karaman - Sylla

Robert Lechleiter on facing Schalke

"I expect an opponent who will be fully focused on winning after their last draw. Schalke have a great offensive force, they do well with many positional changes. This, in turn, will give us space for our forward play. I'm convinced that we will get our chances."

Kees van Wonderen on facing Ulm

"We're prepared. It will be a tight match. We absolutely want to put in a good performance and keep the points at home. That is our goal."

When Lechleiter faced Magath's men

Ulm coach Robert Lechleiter once faced Schalke as a player. In 2010, with VfR Aalen, he narrowly lost 2-1 in the DFB Cup against the Royal Blues, then managed by Felix Magath and featuring goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, despite being a man down early in the match.

Special match for visitors

This will be Ulm's first visit to Gelsenkirchen in 25 years. On 14 April 2000, they drew 0-0 in the Bundesliga in front of 30,800 spectators. Now there are likely to be twice as many spectators. Ulm have previously only played once in front of more than 60,000 fans (on 8 April 2000 in the Bundesliga, when they lost 0-4 to Bayern in front of 63,000 spectators).

1984 - a memorable year for Ulm

In these seven encounters, there were three Schalke victories, three draws, and only one win for Ulm - in March 1984, when Wolfgang Neipp headed the Sparrows to a 1-0 home victory in the second tier.

A rarity

Matches between Schalke and Ulm before this season previously occurred in 1999/2000 in the Bundesliga, in Bundesliga 2 1983/84, and twice in the DFB Cup. In the latter, Schalke also celebrated their last victory against the Sparrows, winning 3-1 at the Donaustadion in December 2020 (the Ulm goal was scored by Johannes Reichert).
