Full-time: Werder Bremen 4-0 Mainz

Werder Bremen got their first points of the new season and first home win since February with a 4-0 victory over Mainz. Marvin Ducksch put the hosts ahead inside three minutes after Andreas Hanche-Olsen had given away a penalty. Jens Stage then doubled the advantage with a thunderous header from a sublime Mitchell Weiser cross. A late flurry from substitutes Leonardo Bittencourt and Justin Njinmah then added gloss as Bremen made up for failing to score in the first two games. Mainz remain without a win in 2023/24.

Now Njinmah!

That's what you call an impact from the substitute. Moments after a first Bundesliga assist, Njinmah and Bittencourt swap roles and the youngster slots away his first Bundesliga goal through the legs of Zentner.

Unusual scenario for Werder

This is the first time Bremen have gone into half-time at home when leading since 25 February against Bochum. They were 2-0 up and won 3-0 in the end - their last three points at the Weserstadion!

Side netting!

Mainz can't get the ball clear and it falls kindly for Kownacki on his full debut for Bremen. He wraps his left foot around it from 20 yards out and left of centre, but he can only find the side netting.

Should be two!

Brilliant stuff from Mitchell Weiser down the right as he sits down his man and cuts back for Romano Schmid, who's originally set him away, but the Austrian sees his name in lights and blasts over from 12 yards with the goal at his mercy!

Ducksch done

He doesn't want to go off but the Bremen goalscorer has to make way after taking a knock to his head. New loan signing Rafael Borre is watching on from the stands, but it's 6'6'' youngster Nick Woltemade who's on.

Last time out

Few who witnessed the closing stages of the last meeting between these teams will forget it in a hurry. As the encounter ticked towards a scoreless draw, four goals were suddenly shared in a dramatic final flurry.

Bremen's good omen

This is the eighth time in their top-flight history that Werder have begun a Bundesliga season with back-to-back defeats. However, the River-Islanders have never been relegated in any of the previous campaigns when they had no points to show after the opening two Bundesliga matches.

So close Mainz

Bo Svensson's men couldn't have come any closer to picking up their first victory of this new Bundesliga season than they did against Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend. Jae-sung Lee's first-half goal had Mainz on their way against ten-man Eintracht, until Omar Marmoush popped at the death to deny the hosts.

05ers' favourite opponents

Mainz have more away wins [7] against Werder Bremen than against any other side in the Bundesliga.

Werder's woes

Werder had the tough task of starting their Bundesliga season against defending champions Bayern Munich and having lost that game 4-0, the Green-Whites subsequently suffered further heartbreak with a last-gasp loss at Freiburg last weekend.
