Full-time: Hertha 1-2 Schalke
Schalke continue their uptick in form with a 2-1 win over strulling Hertha. Tomas Kalas opened the scoring with a first-half header before Fabian Reese's equaliser. The two were level for just four minutes, though, as Kenan Karaman converted his penalty to earn the visitors all three points.

Over the bar
Dárdai lofts the ball high to the edge of the penalty area, where Wollschläger gets his head to it but his effort goes over the bar.

Another chance wasted
Hertha squanders another opportunity to equalise. This time the attack comes from the right, with the ball played across the penalty area. Winkler finds himself free and only needs to shoot into the empty net, but he misses the ball completely.

Big miss
How are Hertha not level? Reese outpaces everyone on the counter, then plays a brilliant ball across the front of the six-yard box but Wollschläger can't convert, with the goal at his mercy.

Can't convert
All Schalke players are standing on the goal line for the indirect free kick. Seguin taps it, Karaman blasts it from five metres and but Zeefuik throws himself in front of the shot to make the block.

Back-pass
Remmert receives the ball in the six-yard box. Leistner intervenes and plays the ball to Ernst, who picks it up with his hands. This results in an indirect free kick from five metres due to a back-pass.

Another miss
Deyovaisio Zeefuik squanders the next big chance for the home side. Cuisance shows great skill to get past his man on the right side of the six-yard box, crosses to the far post - and once again Zeefuik comes flying in, but heads the ball wide of the goal.

Let-off
Massive bit of good fortune for Schalke. Reese is brilliantly sent into the penalty area on the left with a backheel and his chip into the middle should be easy for Karius but the keeper drops the ball. There are two Hertha players there, but neither can score and the ball is cleared.

Top scoring rate for Karaman
That was Karman's 25th goal in the second division, in his 51st appearance.

Karaman converts
That was only Schalke's second penalty this season, the first of which was also converted by Karaman against Cologne on on Matchday 4. He also scored in the reverse fixture against Hertha.

Karaman cannot be stopped
With his 12th goal of the season, Karaman moves up to fifth place in the top-scorers list.

Karaman converts!
The home fans' joy lasted four minutes. Kenan Karaman slots home the penalty low into the bottom right corner to put the visitors back in front.

Penalty for Schalke
Ba dribbles into the penalty area from the right and is brought down by Maza. Referee Timo Gerach immediately points to the spot.

Goooal - Reese scores the equaliser!
And there ends the five-hour goal drought for Hertha. Zeefuik sends Reese into the penalty area on the left, who leaves Kalas for dead and then smashes the ball into the corner to make it 1-1.

Hertha's battle against the goal drought
The Berliners have now been goalless for more than five hours...

Double chance
The first saves for Karius, who is up to the task as Hertha have two shots within five seconds of each other. First, Kenny fires a powerful shot from 18 metres out, which Karius parries out to Cuisance, who strikes again with his left foot but is again denied by Karius. The hosts have been much better since the break.

Encouraging sign for Hertha
The last match that Schalke failed to win despite leading at half-time was the reverse fixture between these two. They were 2-1 up at half-time before Hertha earned a 2-2 draw.

Half-time analysis
Deserved half-time lead for the visitors, who not only had more chances (6-4 shots on goal for Schalke), but also won more duels (54 percent) and ran more (one kilometre more than Hertha). Berlin were harmless apart from the Zeefuik chance, without a shot on target and also without a single corner.

Half-time: Hertha 0-1 Schalke
Schalke deservedly lead 1-0 at half-time against Hertha. The visitors have been far more positive and far more dangerous, with Tomas Kalas' header deservedly putting them ahead at the break. Hertha, on the other hand, only managed one truly dangerous attempt on Loris Karius's goal, who hasn't had to make a save yet.

That was close
The first really good chance for the hosts. Klemens crosses at hip height from the right, a ball which Reese can't reach in the middle, but Deyovaisio Zeefuik connects with a diving header at the far post and narrowly heads wide.

Nothing to do for Karius
Karius, who was both busy and brilliant last week, hasn't had much to do so far, simply because none of the three Berlin shots have been on target.

Yellow card for Bulut
We have the first yellow card in the match as Bulut is late in the tackle against Klemens. It's Bulut's third yellow card of the season.

Karaman returns
Very good news for Schalke as Captain Karaman, who missed the last two matches, is back on board and starts. Donkor and Ba are also brought in from the off, with the latter being rewarded for his goal off the bench last time out with a return to the starting XI. As a result, Murkin, Younes and Barkok move to the bench. Sylla is still absent.
Leitl makes three changes
After the 4-0 defeat in Elversberg, Hertha's coach makes three changes, with Niederlechner, Scherhant and Karbownik sitting out. Instead, captain Leistner, Cuisance and Schuler are given the nod to start.
Schalke starting XI
Karius - Bulut, Kalas, Kamiński, Donkor - Bachmann, Seguin - Aydin, Karaman, Antwi-Adjei - Ba
Hertha starting XI
Ernst - Kenny, Leistner, Dárdai, Zeefuik - Klemens, Gechter - Reese, Maza, Cuisance - Schuler
Stefan Leitl on facing Schalke
"Schalke are a team that are really well-staffed. The season has gone differently from what they expected, but they managed to achieve a certain stability and have started picking up points."
Kees van Wonderen on facing Hertha Berlin
"You always look at the qualities of the opponent, what your own qualities are, and which players are available to play. From that, we develop a plan. With the players we have back in the squad, we have different options."
Reese back to haunt former club
Fabian Reese came through the ranks at Schalke, winning the U19 championship in 2015 alongside Leroy Sané. He played 13 Bundesliga matches for the Royal Blues and was involved in four goals during last season's two victories against his former club.
Home advantage
Hertha have won their last three home matches against Schalke. The last away victory for the visitors was a 2-0 win in the Bundesliga in October 2017. The only away success in the second division against Hertha was the work of 17-year-old Olaf Thon in October 1983 (he scored a hat-trick in a 3-2 win).
Pure tradition
This is the 100th competitive match between the terms, while Hertha have not played against any other club as many times. In the Bundesliga (76 encounters), Schalke are clearly ahead in the overall record, but in the eleven second-tier duels, Hertha have celebrated twice as many victories (six) as their opponents here (three).
Hertha's dominance since relegation
Since these two teams were both relegated in 2023, Hertha have collected seven points in three matches against Schalke. The Royal Blues last won against Hertha in the Bundesliga in April 2023 (5-2 at home), while Schalke's last victory against the Old Lady in the second division was 35 years ago (10 March 1990, 4-1 at home).
