Promoted side Stuttgart have added to their midfield options by snapping up 20-year-old Estudiantes de la Plata talent Santiago Ascacibar on a five-year deal.

The Argentina Under-20 international arrives at the Mercedes-Benz Arena having featured in 40 top-flight games with his former club, for whom he debuted in February 2016. As well as enjoying Under-20 World Cup experience last May, the midfielder was part of the Albiceleste side that took part in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

"I've heard a lot about VfB Stuttgart and have seen great pictures of the fantastic fans and the impressive atmosphere of their games,” Ascacibar said. “I'm looking forward to wearing the VfB jersey [in the] Bundesliga, one of the best leagues in the world,” Stuttgart’s new No.6 added.

“As a matter of principle, you can’t expect miracles from a young player, but Santiago will be able to help us this season [while] in the future, more is possible," Stuttgart’s sporting director Michael Reschke said. The Swabians – who began their return to Germany’s top flight with a 2-0 defeat away to Hertha Berlin – host Mainz on Matchday 2.
