Augsburg's Philipp Max breaks single season record for assists

Augsburg left-back Philipp Max has become the first defender since detailed data collection began in 1993 to reach 12 assists in a single Bundesliga season.

The 24-year-old, who missed out on Joachim Löw’s most recent Germany squad for friendlies against Spain and Brazil, crossed for Rani Khedira to head home in Augsburg’s 3-1 loss to Werder Bremen on Saturday.

The defeat leaves Augsburg ninth, six points off the European chase, but it’s bittersweet for Max, who now has three more assists to his name than Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, and four more than Kimmich’s Bavarian teammate Arjen Robben, who lines up in the final third.
