Current Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is the ideal candidate to take over at Bayern Munich next season, according to former Schalke and Bayern midfielder Olaf Thon.

Jupp Heynckes' contract expires in the summer, leaving the record champions in need of a new coach. Thon, who played for Bayern between 1988-1994, believes they only have one option, which is to appoint the best. For him, that can only mean former Borussia Dortmund coach, Klopp.

"I've been thinking, since I know Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who would be an even better choice for Bayern than Thomas Tuchel," Thon told Kicker. "That can only be Klopp. The big question is whether they can lure him away from Liverpool.

"I don't know any other coach, a Lucien Favre or anybody else, who I feel would fit in at Bayern. I believe Bayern will do everything they can to get the best coach after Jupp Heynckes, and in my eyes that can only be Klopp."

Klopp won two Bundesliga titles and the DFB Cup in a successful spell with Dortmund.

Klopp, 55, coached Dortmund to back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2010/11 and 2011/12, completing a league and DFB Cup double in 2012. A year later, his Schwarzgelben were beaten by Bayern in the final of the UEFA Champions League, while he is currently underlining once again his credentials in European football's leading club competition, leading the Reds into the quarter-finals.
