Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels praised his side's defensive effort after the 1-0 win at Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Matchday 22, although conceded things could have turned out differently had Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez taken his late chance.
Goal: 0-1 Aubameyang (64’)
Mats Hummels (Dortmund defender): "We're putting in really good work as a team at the moment, particularly at the back. We’re not giving many chances away and then we're getting those little bits of luck, such as when Chicharito fortunately missed that chance late on."
Sven Bender (Dortmund midfielder): "It was a really tight game and three really important points for us. We're defending unbelievably well at the moment and everyone who comes into the team knows exactly what to do and how we play. That means we rarely lose any quality when we freshen things up. Of course, though, against Leverkusen there are going to be one or two dangerous situations because they're a really good side. We won 1-0 and didn't concede so that means it's been a good day."
Matthias Ginter (Dortmund defender): "It's always difficult to play in Leverkusen. Their philosophy at the moment seems to be to play lots of long balls towards [Stefan] Kießling. We knew that and we accepted that it would be a bit of a battle. It was like that earlier in the season too, but all that counts is that we won. Games here could often go either way and so a win is particularly important. We’re happy that we managed to take three points, though."
Thomas Tuchel (Dortmund coach): "I think we were worthy winners today. We were very switched-on in the first half and deservedly went ahead in the second. We had to play a lot of long balls today, and that was down to Leverkusen's style. After the break, though, we found space a bit better and dominated the game."
Roger Schmidt (Leverkusen coach): "It was a really close game today. You could see that both sides had intense games in midweek and we struggled slightly in front of goal."
