Cologne - Hannover 96 defensive specialist Salif Sane was the runaway winner of the Matchday 31 Goal of the Week vote thanks to his acrobatic effort away to VfL Wolfsburg.

Despite going up against some stiff competition, Sane took 59 per cent of the ballot for his perfectly executed overhead kick to level the score at 2-2 and earn the struggling northern side a valuable point in the battle against the drop.

'Never scored a goal like that before'

Indeed, the script could not have been any better for the 24-year-old Senegal centre-back. Wolfsburg raced to a 2-0 lead at half-time, but the visitors started the second period determined to make amends and duly pulled a goal back through Jimmy Briand's header. With the wind in their sails, Hannover continued to attack and deservedly equalised when Sane struck, volleying home after Bas Dost had inadvertently flicked on a Hiroshi Kiyotake corner.

"I've never scored a goal like that before," said a delighted Sane afterwards. "I've tried it in training and now it's come off in a match!" Another goal scored in that game finished a distant second in the poll, with Wolfsburg attacker Ivan Perisic earning 18 per cent of the votes for his thumping effort into the top corner after cutting in from the left.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu grabbed the final podium spot with 17 per cent for his delicious free-kick past Manuel Neuer in the Werkself's 2-0 win over FC Bayern München, while VfB Stuttgart's Martin Harnik and Leverkuen's Julian Brandt trailed in a distant fourth and fifth respectively.
