Bremen - SV Werder Bremen have been dealt a blow with the news that star striker Franco Di Santo is out of this weekend's northern derby against Hamburger SV with injury.

Skripnik: 'We can compensate'

The 25-year-old suffered damage to his knee ligaments on Wednesday and has been deemed unfit to feature on Matchday 12 after not training with the team the following day.

"It's obviously a setback for us," said head coach Viktor Skripnik. "Franco had been in great form and we'd love to have had him available. But we do have alternative options in the squad who are chomping at the bit to be involved and who have our complete faith. I firmly believe we can compensate for Franco's absence." Di Santo is currently joint-top of the scoring charts with six goals in eleven appearances and has played a major role in Bremen's upturn in fortunes following the arrival of Skripnik in late October. In total, the Argentina international has ten goals in 43 top-flight appearances in Germany.
